This is a Medion Multimedia PC (MEDION Akoya P5300 D) With an 686 AMIBIOS). Im using a SOYO techaid diagnostic card to troubleshoot . The boot up process stops at this D4 error. I've tried swapping ram and removing ram to no evail. there are 2 512mb rams and 2 1gb ram . I tried just the 1gb and thw 512mb seperately without luck. I have also tried two 1gb from another machine without any luck. I thought it might be the ram but at this point, think the problem may be before this point.

Ok what shows D4 error? This appears on the screen itself? The OEM patch part refers to some software patch for the card that updates it for use with your system. Does the machine boot up or does it halt at the error?

Give me some more info here...

Thanks
Tim

I see, if you take that techcard out of the system though, will it get past that error, or the error is why you bought the card? It sounds like the motherboard itself is the culprit if you have swapped in ram that you know is good and it still fails, then the northbridge on the motherboard is to blame unfortunately.

If you have the part # for the board I can try to track one down for you.

Yikes ya that is just some generic motherboard, that number doesn't pull up anything at all, anywhere... You can definitely get a good replacement board for the system, I am sure all the components are fine. Do you know what model AMD processor, or at least what socket type? I can recommend some good boards for sure, but I am sure it's the board that's doing it.

Sure thing, send it to me at [email protected]

  • Anonymous Oct 06, 2010

Ah ok, I just replied to your email asking for this info lol, let me update you here. Give me like 4 minutes to find the board..

Ok based on the pictures you have sent it is definitely a Micro ATX board as well, as smaller version of a regular motherboard. I would recommend this one, the price is amazing, free shipping, and a super board for sure. Definitely will work with that 8450 you have now:

What are the functions of its parts?

1) Motherboard Diagram, (Proper computer speak for motherboard is Mainboard. I just use Mobo.
MOtherBOard)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

2) Soyo SY-KT400 Dragon Ultra - motherboard diagram,

http://techreport.com/articles.x/4139

CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short.
The 'Brain' of the computer.

The Processor sits in a processor socket.
The processor socket for the Soyo SY-KT400 is a Socket A. Also known as Socket 462.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_462

The motherboard chipset is the Northbridge chip, and Southbridge chip.

The motherboard chipset for the Soyo SY-KT400 is the VIA KT400 - Northbridge chip, and the VIA VT8235 - Southbridge chip.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VIA_chipsets#Slot_A_and_Socket_A

The Northbridge chip handles the Faster capabilities of the computer.

The Northbridge chip determines what Processors can be supported, what Ram Memory can be supported, and High-Speed graphics.

High-Speed graphics being AGP and PCI Express, not a graphics card installed in a PCI slot, nor Integrated Graphics.

The Processor communicates with the Northbridge chip through the Front Side Bus. (FSB)
Think of the FSB as an 'Information Highway'.

The Northbridge chip communicates TO the Southbridge chip through the Internal Bus.

The Southbridge chip handles the Slower capabilities of the computer.

The Southbridge chip handles IDE, SATA, USB, Ethernet, Integrated Graphics, and the PCI bus.
(As in a graphics card installed in a PCI expansion slot, for one example)

Also handles information from the Super I/O chipset.
The Soyo SY-KT400 - Super I/O chipset is a VIA VT1211

There are 5 PCI slots. All connected to the PCI bus, which is connected to the Super I/O chipset.

Click on this link,

http://techreport.com/articles.x/4139/2

Scroll down a little bit to the photo of the Soyo SY-KT400 motherboard.

A) At the top middle is the Processor socket. White in color, rectangular in shape, square hole in the middle, and socket holes on it.

To the immediate left of the Processor socket are 8 Electrolytic Capacitors in a row.
These capacitors are Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors. (Used all over the motherboard)

These particular 8 are part of the motherboard voltage regulator circuit.
Specifically, voltage regulation for the Processor.

B) To the right of the Processor socket are three long Black Ram Memory slots. (Proper computer speak for Slot, is Bank. 3 Ram Memory Banks)

C) The Blue and the White connectors to the right of the Ram Memory slots are IDE connectors.
One for the Harddrive, the other one for the optical drive/s.

D) Underneath the Processor is the Northbridge chip. There is a clear fan sitting on it.

E) The large square Black chip with VIA on it, below the Ram Memory slots, and to the right of the purple PCI slots, is the Southbridge chip.

F) The 5 purple long slots are PCI expansion slots.

G) To the right of the bottom purple PCI slot is the CMOS battery.

H) Above the purple PCI slots is a brown AGP slot.
Uses AGP 8X graphics cards

When starting the laptop acer 5100 it tyries to start and it shows the following Bus 06, device 02 ,function 00 error resource conflict pci in slot 03 bus 06 device 04 function...

If it just started doing this all of a sudden, then it is a good bet that *********** board is fried. If you just installed some memory or a communications card or new drive, then take it out and see if it still does it. If not, check the installation instructions to make sure it was put in right.

System will not boot

Do you have any pci devices installed? Bad PCI deviced, especailly modems, will cause a PC not to post. Did you try swapping the memory for a different module? It could be the stick and not the slot. Also, are there any blown capacitors on the MOBO, you would know this if they are puffed up at the top.

Error Code in Diagnostic 1000-0146 BUT MY COMPUTER WORKS?????

The 1000-0146 is a diagnostic result indicating a failing hard drive. Just because the drive fails diagnostics, doesn't mean it will not function and is may run for an extended period before if becomes unusable. But take this as a warning and backup any important data you have on that drive NOW.

As far as your PCMCIA Card slot not working.
  1. Ensure it is enabled in the BIOS and you have no driver errors in Device Manager.
  2. If those all check out, replace the card cage: http://cgi.ebay.com/DELL-LATITUDE-D600-PCMCIA-SLOT-CAGE-CMD3BE7632_W0QQitemZ280331231481QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLaptops_Nov05?hash=item280331231481&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Soyo dragon dip switch settings

http://www.soyo.com/uploads/downloads/manuals/k7/mk7vkp2%2011.pdf

here is the pdf with your user manual from the board.
the pci indeed is the slot for the modem and for the sound card, also.
the pci are slots near the agp slot..shorter than the agp.they are equivalent so you can put the modem and the sound card and to interchange the place if you want.
I think youll find more usefull infos in the manual anyway.
good luck
