Amjbritto,

There are two ways to do this, depending on what extent you want to protect the spreadsheet.

Windows Read-Only method:

  1. Save and Close the Excel file.
  2. Using Windows Explorer, locate the Excel file in its folder.
  3. Right-click on the file name
  4. Click on "Properties" at the bottom of the drop-down window.
  5. Check the [x] Read-Only box and [OK]
  6. * DONE *
Excel "Protect" Method:

  1. Open the Excel spreadsheet that you want to protect
  2. On the top menu, select [Tools]
  3. Click [Protection] on the drop-down menu
  4. Select [Protect Workbook]
  5. Check [x]Structure and [x]Windows
  6. Enter a password if you wish, but remember it!
  7. Click [OK]
  8. Save and close the spreadsheet and test the protection.
  9. *DONE *
Thanks for using FixYa.

I have made an excel file with linked data in MS Office 2007.The file opens in read only mode though it is not open in any other location.

Possibly read only option is checked in file properties.

Right click the file and review the setting. Uncheck the read only box if necessary.

I created an Excel program and somehow hit something that caused it to become a "read only" file that I cannot change nor add to. How did it happen, and how do I remove the "read only"...

Here are the steps on how you can make it a read/write file:

  1. Make sure that the file is not open in Excel.
  2. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
  3. In the Exploring window, open the drive or folder that contains the file.
  4. Click the file name.
  5. On the File menu, click Properties.
  6. Click the General tab.
  7. Clear the Read-only check box.

Hope this helps!

A file with xls extension is not opening in my Netbook with Windows Vista Home Premium - what to do?

You need an application that will read the file. That would be Microsoft Excel or Microsoft's free Excel Viewer. The viewer can be downloaded free from Microsoft. It's possible that the file type has been "attached" to a different, incorrect application. Right-click on the file. Select Properties. Look at "Opens with:" If it doesn't say Microsoft Excel or Excel Viewer, click change and browse to the appropriate program file.

Another option would be to download openoffice, a free office suite and set it to be your default xls viewer.

Excel password recovery

There are several " free " or Trial softwares available to clear the password from excel files, your best bet is to make a copy / backup of the original, and try your luck at either guessing, or using one of the multitude of free software's available to get the document unlocked.

You can do a simple google search, or search CNET.com for related softwares.

Excel file opens in read only mode

Hello,

There could be 1 of 3 things affecting this:

1. Is another application using that excel document? If so you will not be able to edit it until the other application stops using it.

2. Is the file currently in a location that you do not have write permissions? eg. another users shared documents

3. Check in the properties to see if it is set to read only. (right click on the document and click properties. in the 'General' Tab see if 'Read Only' is checked. If yes, uncheck it and click okay)

An easy way to make it editable providing you are the only one using it (If the above fixes dont work) open it up in excel and then click File --> Save As... and then save it somewhere else. That will then make it editable for you.

Have a Great Day!

Problem in ms excel

right click on the file and click on properties, then uncheck the "read only" box. you need to also check if you have the admin rights to open the file since it could be the cause why you're getting that error. if it will still not allow you to open it, ask the author of the file to provide you the rights.

hope this'll help you and just ask me if you'll have other concern.

ciao!
