If the motherboard is truly defective, you may be able to locate a replacement online. There are many boards available from a number of vendors. A good starting point is always eBay. The same is true if you need a power adapter. Lots of replacements are available.

If the trouble is that the power jack has broken loose from the motherboard, it might be possible to repair the one you have. It's a common problem in laptops for the solder connections holding the jack onto the board to break because of flexing the power plug. Sometimes it's only necessary to resolder those connections. Most service places (especially the manufacturer's authorized servicers) would rather replace the board than try to repair it. You might want to try another shop and get a second opinion.

If you do need a motherboard, it may not be worth the repair, though. With laptop prices pretty low, you might find between the part price and labor, it may not cost much more to replace the computer. You can always remove the hard drive and transfer your personal files to a new machine.

Hope this has given you some help in making your decision. Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!

Take a multimeter, and measure the VOLTAGE and AMPERAGE being emitted by the AC power-supply. If "none", or much less than the ratings printed on the label, then it's time to replace the power-supply.

Otherwise, it most-likely is the connector where the AC adapter is plugged-in to the motherboard that is not transmitting, i.e., electrically-disconnected from the motherboard.
Maybe, resoldering the leads from the socket to the motherboard will fix the problem. Or, take the laptop to a qualified technician, for proper repair.

My lap top computer (Dell) . The hookup to the electricity is broken off . The little prong that sticks out for you to hook up to is broken off inside the computer on the mother board

This will require attention from a technician that can disassemble your notebook and replace the power connector. Contact Dell or a reputable local computer repair shop. Most likely, you will receive faster and more affordable service from the local shop.

Hope this helps.

Hard drive installation

You should be able to install that drive. The biggest variable is if it is a SATA or PATA drive. This model was built for SATA drives, but I think you may be able to get a PATA drive to work with the right adapters.

For the step by stem directions see the link below. It will take you right to the Dell support page. Refer to the "Adding a Second Hard Drive" section.
