I tried on another computer, your friend. We changed the jumper, it has not helped. I do not know how much he heads, cylinders, tracks, no one says about it! Can manually set the number of tracks, cylinders?

Model number is written on the body ST340014A, there is still S/N-5JXEFWV7, but nothing more ... Thanks for the link! The Internet has found what looks like spoiled code on the board, which is responsible for loading and determination in the BIOS.

  • ru3ap Oct 06, 2010

It did not help. I hear the rotation of the disk when applying it to his ear.

  • ru3ap Oct 06, 2010

    That was multiplied by the sector on the track, heads, cylinders, and I did not get 40GB ... 512 * 63 * 16 * 16383 = 8 455 200 768?

This does not sound hopeful, Have you tried the same drive in different slots on the motherboard and using different power and data cables?
Perhaps in a different machine? Is this IDE or SATA?
Apart from that you may find your only solution to be sending the disk to a data recovery expert.

It's IDE. Tried on another computer is not defined in the BIOS!

Have you tried it on it's own. Have you changed any of the master/slave jumper settings?

If you look next to the power or data inputs on the drive at the front there will be a small number of pins on their own (usually 6 or 8) and they may have a plastic jumper over a couple pins - not where it is and remove it. Then plug it into a pc with no other drives connected not even cd drives and see how you get on.

I think the model number will be ST340014A but you should be able to find this out on the drive itself. The manual can be downloaded here:
    http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/suppo...

have a look at the summary specification table and see if that helps.

Has any of this helped? If not then you might have to send it away. I think it could be broke! is there any kind of noise coming from the disk once you power it on?

there was wrong in the set up of jumper in your 80gb hdd. Look closely to the 80gb harddrive, in between the ide cable terminal and the power supply connector you will see 8pin terminals paired together and a jumper use to short the paired terminals. It is most likely that the jumper was configure to detect your hdd as master. If the ide cable you use for the 80gb hdd was also use for the dvd/cdrom drive then it will conflict with it if both jumper setting was set to master. See the description of jumper settings in the sticker of the hdd. Position the jumper to slave.

Reboot your system again and see if the 80gb finally appear in your system. When system boot upon detection of hdd, the primary master should be 250gb while your primary/secondary slave will be read your 80gb hard disk.

Seagate Barracuda 7200 fault:
Hello A.
Is the drive internal or external use?
Could be several reasons:
The head has crashed.
The driver is corrupt or missing.
The controller board on HDD has failed.
Data or power connector / cable loose.
Disk has overheated and failed.

Open the PC and check cables.
Check ventilation.
Is disk clicking or getting very hot?

If external, check connecting cables.

Download latest driver from Seagate.

If all else fails, take system to computer sales / service center.
They may be able to diagnose the fault for you.

The final option, but very costly, is professional data recovery.

if it isnt picked up in the BIOS check the jumper on the back its a small plastic cover which will blank out two of the gold pins remove it follow the diagram on the front and set it to master.
Failing that check to see if you have power to the device and the ribbon power cord isnt damaged.
