Question about LG LFC21760 Bottom Freezer French Door Refrigerator

1 Answer

The freezer is frosting only on the right side of this bottom mount model. We defrosted it and cleaned it out, even it was emptied at one time and unplugged. Then it frosted again, in the same manner. We took out like a bucket of frost and ice build up. We checkd the seal, it seems ok. The door also seems to be shutting properly with no gaps.

Model GS20-D side by side will not cycle. Why?

Hello Carol;
My name is Peter. I am a retired field service technician.
Your given model number has more digits to it, therefore I can not identify your particular unit for spare parts numbers.
1.) Defrost Timer - Remove the front bottom grill. It just clips on, 1 clip on each end - just pull on it. On the bottom right you will see a small plate with a hole through it. This hole has a slot for a screw driver. With a flat head screw driver turn the slot clockwise. You will hear a clicking sound. Slowly turn one click at a time until the refrigerator turns off.
Wait 30 minutes. Observe the freezer back wall. Do you hear a hissing sound (condensate hitting the heater) or is the back defrosting? If this is happening then you have a bad defrost timer.
If this is not happening your defrost timer is good. Using your screw driver turn the slot 1 click at a time until you refrigerator turns on.
2.) Defrost Heater - Purchase this part before you start the work. Observe the part and the connectors on it. Unplug the unit. Completely empty your freezer section and all shelf. Remove the light bulb cover, it clips on squeeze to remove. Remove the light bulb. Unscrew all of the screws in the back panel. This panel has rubber strips on each side and may give you some difficulty removing the back panel. Observe how the heater is mounted. There are two reflector plate holding each heating element, remove them, 1 screw on each side. Disconnect the existing heater and install the new heater. BE CAREFUL THE FREEZER COIL IS RASOR SHARP, WEAR GLOVES. Reassemble. I do not think you will have to remove the ice maker and bucket, but you may, to remove the lower back panel.
Purchase Locally: Defrost Timer $63.00. Defrost Heater $65.00.
Purchase over the internet for about 1/2 price.

Freezer side not freezing

Check for ice / frosting inside the freezer .... If present you probably have a defrost problem.... This causes the freezer coil to ice up and block the air flow ... the causes could be a bad defrost heater , defrost timer, defrost sensors, or control board. Also make sure that the condenser coil is clean. remove ALL dust with a vacuum and a coil brush .the coil is located either on the bottom or on the back side of the unit... Ref is cool not cold, tried vaccum the front underneath, I hear is running on top, even clean out the freezer, any suggestion?? mode # 596.638222.00 and how old is this???

Look and see if you have frost on the back side of the freezer. If you do then the defrost heater and thermostat need to be replaced. 596 prefix on your model number tells me that is an Amana Bottom mount ice box. Service Manual

Kitchenaid superba side by side top is too warm,

The defrost cycle is suppose to be automatic on this model. To see if you have a defrost problem take the lower container out of the freezer, and empty the bottom shelves enough to see the back panel inside the freezer. If there is a build up of frost on the panel or the slots in the lower back panel the automatic defrost is not functioning. The most likely suspect is the ADC or automatic defrost control. This control runs about $120.00 and is located in the console of the fresh food section (top).

If there is no frost check to see if the fan in the freezer is running. If the fan is not running you have a failure of the fan motor which is a little less expensive but a bit more challenging to replace, the shelves, the shelf slides and back panel of the freezer have to come out to replace this motor.

Freezer building up with frost

Sounds like the defrosting system has a faulty timer/board, faulty heating element or bad electrical connections to these components.

More info, let me know...

Model gss25wg. 5 years old. Worked fine when we got it home. Now

Try to remove rear wall of freezer to check frost pattern. An even but light patter of frost on full coil is normal. Coils full of frost with aluminum almost fully hidden generally means defrost problem. Heavier frost on the bottom coils and gradually tapering off as you go up until the top coils have no frost usually means a leak of freon or a bad compressor.

Thick layer of ice has formed at bottom of freezer. Cannot even pull out the bottom basket

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, ie defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Refrigerator and freezer not cooling/freeding

Possibly a defrost circuit problem -

1) Bad defrost thermostat
2) Bad defrost heater
3) Bad defrost timer
4) Failed evaporator fan motor.

Look for frost accumulated inside the louvers at the back panel, top and bottom. If you see it, remove food from freezer and put in ice chest. Take out shelves, get hair dryer and warm the backside of the freezer, directing air down the louvers. Then leave to sit for 4-6 hours with the freezer door open. Put towels in the bottom of the freezer to catch any melted ice.
After period of time, plug unit back in and power the unit back up. Once you know it's cooling, empty ice chests back into freezer.

If there is a problem in any of the above components, then it will show up in 3-4 weeks witht he same problem again.
