I desperately need to buy a power cable. I tried Cables to Go and Maxtor/Seagate. No luck.

You can remove the disk-drive from the unit,
and then see:
to buy a new enclosure, which will include a new power-cable,
and 'transplant' your disk-drive into the new unit,
to regain access to the files on your disk-drive.

Testimonial: "This is great. The price for the enclosure will probably be comparable to the cost of a power cable. Thanks."

I have a Maxtor 20GB Hard Disk which when connected to a computer the BIOS is able to read it but the problem is the HD only shows ZERO GB(its empty). Can this problem be fixed in order to make it show 20GB...

Computer sees the drive. That is important. I'm assuming this uses a standard IDE cable and the drive isn't physically damaged. Make sure it is the only drive connected and it is the Master. Try flipping the cable if you have checked that the connection has a snug fit. Put the connector that you had the hard drive originally on and place it on the motherboard and the connection that the motherboard had insert it in the hard drive.Or better yet try a new cable. IDE cables have a tendency to fail. You could also try some recovery software. Maxtor is now part of Seagate so you can try here:
If you absolutely have to get data off this drive and you are desperate, then you could try the freezer trick. Put a dry towel and hard drive in the freezer for an hour or 2. Take the hard drive out and wrap it with the cold dry towel. That is to try and minimize any condensation build up. Plug in the hard drive and see if it works. This could potentially kill the hard drive but I have recovered data using this method before. If this works for you do not depend on this drive anymore. Good luck.

Computer powers on and runs but it will not post hhd in BIOS. any help?

Shut down you're system. Open you're case and double check the power cable and data cable from hdd to motherboard. (Disconnect both cables and re-connect both). Make sure the cables are fully inserted. Power up the system and enter the bios. The hdd drive should be listed. If not replace the data cable with a new one and check the bios again.
If you have two hdd, ATA IDE drives connected, make sure that each hdd is jumpered correctly. One set to Master with a slave.
The second drive should be jumpered as a slave.
If you're running 1 hdd make sure the hdd is jumper as a Master without a slave. There is a sticker on the hdd to help you set the jumper correctly.
If the bios still does not see you're hdd than either the hdd is bad or the motherboard controller is bad.
To check if the hdd is faulty, check the sticker on the drive. Find the manufacture's name and model. Google the manufacture's name. Every manufacture provides free software that will test and repair the drive by allowing you to create either a bootable floppy disk or bootable CD disk that runs in a DOS like window. Example: For a Seagate drive you would download SeaTools for DOS. Instructions are listed on the site;
Seagate also supports Maxtor drives using the same software.

Good luck!

My computer stopped recognizing my seagate

same thing happened with me, Looks like your pc usb slot is not providing enough power to the drive wither use a Y - USB cable (comes with three USB ends ; where in you will insert two USB cable ends to two usb ports on your pc and the other to ur hard disk) or buy a powered USB root hub.

You can buy a USB to USB mini cable at almost any store with PC accessories, even Walmart. Buy a high quality one since the drive is powered from the USB 2.0 port. Good Luck

I am adding a seagate 320 g drive to my dell 4300 dimentions.. i have one ribbon.. with black(end socket) and grey(middle socket).. i have a maxtor already installed..the jumper was set to master on slave...

First of all make sure that your maxtor drive is jumpered for cable select and connected to black connector. Make sure Seagate drive is also configured for cable select and then connect to grey connector. If the Seagate drive is brand new you will need to initialise and partition the disk once recognised by Windows

Lost power supply

I think you might find this link most useful, from the Seagate Community Forums.

In short, others have had great difficulty buying Maxtor replacement power adapters, however you can buy a generic 12V, 3A DC power supply for $15-20 from a number of sources. Confirm your actual power requirements by referring to the product label on the drive itself.

Hope it helps,

How do I change jumper settings on Maxtor hard drive, model: 51024h2, hda: 02a, pcba: 61a?

Here's the manual for your drive.

I think the section you need is 2-5. You will need to disconnect the drive from power and the ribbon cable. Use gentle pressure to remove the cables.

If you aren't able to remove the jumpers by hand, I would suggest using tweezers or something similar.

My maxtor hdd is not being detected on any machine

If the problem occured upon installation of a new hard drive then it may just be a jumper problem. Remember that there are two types of cables. With old type cables, jumpers must be MASTER and SLAVE (MA and SL). With newer cables, jumpers will be CS (Cable Select) for both drives. If in doubt, try both type. If Cable Select works, then position the connectors and determines which drive is C: and which is D.
