Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

The request could not be performed because of an i/o device error

HI,
I am getting above error only when I was trying to open my "pictures" folder that was about 10GB. All these are my personal pictures organized for more than 15 years.
I kept on using this WD 500 GB mybook between Xp home, Win2000 and XP prof systems. It was working fine so far and I have around 115 GB data on this drive. I did not have accessing any other folders on this drive.

I used some digital photos recovery software and was able to get all of my pictures back but I would like to retrieve them along with folders in which I orgranized them date and year wise.

Please help and thanks in advance.

It takes a long time for the hard drive to be read, and then when i try to open any files it takes an immense out of time and then gives me this message: The request could not be performed because of an i/o device error

Same I/O device error problem. It appears that my problems arose after converting the drive from FAT32 to NTFS.

    i have the same problem

  • rranger Jan 08, 2009

I have the same problem in FAT32 and have not been able to get past 3.5 gigs with a 320 gig Passport Essential drive.

I have an older 40 gig Passport drive that works like a charm.

Is this a hardware error for all of us or is something else going on, particularly since it doesn't seem to be NTFS related.

i get the i/o error also... i'm thinking this problem is very wide spread given the google search I just performed. It's a shame it's such a crappy product, mine is only about 2months old.

Here are some photo recovery software(also recover videos and music) for your options.

Photo Recovery (for Windows)
Photo Recovery for Mac

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the WD in case the original files(your pictures or vidies) are overwritten.

I/O device errors are rarely repairable without buying new hardware. Test the drive with manufacturer's diagnostic software. Toshiba do not have any such software but you can use SeaTools for Windows:
Click Downloads here: http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

Choose the Long/Extended test for thorough testing of the drive.

It's probably too late for you to do anything by yourself.

But, look online for professional "data recovery services".
These companies can fix most disk-drives, just long-enough to read all the files, and save them. Not "inexpensive", of course.

Hi,

It seems that your Harddrive has problems with internal Micro USB connector. WD, Transcend and Seagate brands are having such kind of problems.

Try to adjust the micro usb cable in such a way that your data transfer or ongoing activity will not hamper. Else to have perfect solution on your problem, backup complete data from the HDD and hand-over the HDD to the nearest WD technical department.

They may diagnose the issue and if not resolvable, will handover new WD Harddrive.

Thanks,
Amar

Hmm? Your drive may be corrupted which makes it unuseable. I hate to admit your files may be lost at this point also. In order to reuse the unit, repartion and format the unit. I hope this helps.

SanDisk Cruzer® Micro 2GB WON'T Download pictures

Try using Windows Explorer to copy them. I'll try to help you out.

When you plug the drive in and a window pops up, select "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer". If they show up in the right pane as thumbnails, select View>Details from the menu at the top.

Left click the top picture, then scroll all the way down to the bottom. Press and hold the <Shift> key, then left click the last picture in the list. This should highlight all the files.

Right click on any of the pics, then go down to "Send to...". This opens several choices, but you probably should choose "My Documents". This will copy all of your pics into your My Documents folder.

Once you get them there you can move them to your My Pictures folder in much the same way.
