Question about Maytag Dryers

Just had the idler pulley replaced on my Maytag dryer (loud banging noise)but it now has a very high pitched squeal sound (awful)! When I called the repair guy back he implied that the part might need to be used for a while(self lubricating?) but he wasn't sure and then implied if the noise kept up I may need to replace the dryer as it is probably the motor! It is only 1 1/2 years old! Help!

    Thank you. I will check further although I just got off the phone w/ Maytag and they told me 1 year coverage on labor and parts. A bit disheartening. When he replaced the idler pulley there was soot which concerned me and he couldn't really answer the where and why and that is when he launched in on possibly needing a new motor. He indicated with a nrew motor price and his labor I might as well go buy a new dryer. It is only 18 months old so I am not real happy with that suggestion. It is heating but the squealing/whining sound is quite disturbing.

Most Maytag products have a 2 yr. parts warranty from the factory, so if you need a motor replaced, do it before your warranty expires. Check your warranty certificate for your particular units coverage.
I never heard of a self-lubricating idler pulley and this problem should not cause you to have to replace the dryer.
Note:Maytag produces several different designs and purchase prices of dryers with their name on it, so it would be beneficial to have a model number, so that we can provide more accurate information.

    After researching the model that you provided, this is a Magic Chef design with Maytag's logo on it, Possibly named Performa. This model is considered a "Heavy Duty" model, whereas, a Maytag design is rated "Commercial Duty", and still contains a Maytag logo.

    Disheartening, yes...In my opinion, this is an unethical practice because of the deception involved. I used to sell both designs, side by side, and at significantly different price ranges, but I always informed my customer of the difference in "Duty" ratings.

    You might try to talk to a different customer service rep. I have found that persistance along with the right attitude can produce positive results. Don't take "No" for an answer! You paid good money for a Maytag brand appliance and deserve a little more consideration for this particular issue.

Maytag dryer makes loud squeeling noise when it gets hot. Drys clothes but makes such a loud squeeling noise. Have to let it cool down to continue to dry.

A loud squeal is usually caused by either an idler pulley bearing. a drum roller bearing or a loose belt.

If you do repair it yourself.... do yourself a HUGE favor and either take a picture of the belt routing or draw a belt routing diagram BEFORE dis-assembly.

The dryer heats and turns fine, but makes a very loud and high pitch metallic sound, as if it was suffering

it's either your roller
or more than likley it's your idler pulley that your belt is riding on

Maytag electric dryer is making a high pitched noise

The squealing noise is from the belt tensioner. Replace the pulley only on the tensioner along with a new belt. The bearing in the pulley is causing the squeal. Sears will sell this in a kit. The top and the front panel of the dryer will have to be removed to replace these parts

Dryer is making an extremely loud squealing noise. Was told I needed to replace the idler pulley. What do I have to take apart on the dryer to do this?

Turn the power off to the dryer (unplug it).

The back of the dryer will have to be removed. Then disconnect the drive assembly and start checking the pulley components. I have included a picture for a Maytag dryer belt routing below. If it is the idler pulley, it will be the pulley shown just below the motor pulley.

If it turns out to not be the idler pulley, it may be one or more of the drum support pulleys around the drum, so check those too. This would also be a good time to check the belt.

Your description sounds like one or both of the rear drum supports (rollers) is bad. A quiet thumping is almost always present as the weld in the drum comes in contact with the drum supports. A binding support will squeal, and the thumping could be worse at that time. After running the dryer until the noises are present, once disassembled, you can tell if a support is bunding or rolling normally by spinning it by hand. The same goes for the idler pulley. Make sure power is disconnected from the unit befor attempting any repairs.

While the unit is disassembled for repair, make sure your your old cat is not inside.
