Question about Coleman Heating & Cooling

2 Answers

I have a Coleman 5T 13 Seer Heat Pump. When the unit is running there is a lot of vibration (outside unit) and I hear a tinny sound (possibly like the fan hitting something). This seems to be worse during the hottest part of the day. When the unit had its last service they said it was low on freon and recharged it and it seems to be since then that the problem has occurred. Is it possible that the unit is overcharged? And if so is this dangerous, i.e. could it cause permanent damage or imminent failure? Or could it be the balance of the fan also causing unit vibration?

First thing I would ask is did they locate the leak in the system before they recharged it? Your answer is YES to all three of your questions. If the unit is overcharged you can get what is called a liquid flood back to the compressor and this condition can cause compressor failure. Fans are balanced at the factory when manufactured. If a blade is bent or damaged it will throw it out of balance.

To the second poster: The 3 amp fuse is more than likely for the control circuit only. If it blows there is a problem in the control circuit. Could possibly be caused by a burnt or shorted coil in one of the relays. If a coil is burnt you will be able to tell which one it is by simply smelling it.

WHATS WRONG WHEN THE GAS DOES NOT COME OUT TO BE IGNITED IN A COLEMAN HEAT AND AIR UNIT.

There are several issues that may cause this. I would have you check that you are getting 24 volts to the gas valve when you call for heating.
Things that may cause you not to have 24 volts:
1. Does the draft inducer motor start when you call for heating?
2. Does the pressure switch close after the draft motor starts?
3. Do you get 24 volts after the pressure switch closes.
4. Are all the limit switches closed? There should be 3 of them one in front of the burners (usually with a manual reset button called a rollout switch), one behind the burners (auto reset) and one in the blower section (auto reset)
Do you have gas to the unit"

Some companies do sell a variable speed kit. It includes the motor and controls. Get your model and serial number of your unit and contact your local Payne dealer. The can locate the proper kit if available for you.

My outside unit will not come on when heating. will only run auxiliary heat

Jeff most H/P are set up on a 2*f lag in the T-stat. If heat pump fails to come on or cant keep up it will fall back 2*f on the stat and the electric or auxiliary heat will come on so you don't lose all your conditioned air in the house. Ok so why isn't the H/P coming on first you must have a 24v signal to bring the unit on.That seems good because the stat is bringing the aux heat on. A service person should be called/ some possible problems, Low pressure switch lockout. Failed contactor, no line Voltage. I recommend a service call anything past the T- Stat. Hope this helps.

Depending on make and model sounds like a check valve clicking. It can sound like it is coming from that area. You say your unit is 16 years old. Honeywell did servey on unit 10 years and older and found out they loose 25% effeicency after 10 years. You may think about changing it out. With the new tax credits you can get a 16 seer unit for the price of a 13 seer. I went from a 10 to 15 seer and my power bill dropped 40%. Rus.

Fan not running on Heat Pum

That does not sound normal at all, I have a Goodman Heatpump and the Fan on the Evaporator (outside unit) should run as soon as it starts up!
The only delay you should be seeing is when the unit starts, the fan in the AHU starts 5 seconds after and runs for about 1.5 minutes after shutdown.
