Wmzfamily I would recommend a 4 amp charger and you should be able to get one through your local provider that sold your chair. You can also try e-bay but you really need a fairly new charger that shuts off when the batteries become fully charged. You also want to look for a charger that has an on/off switch. it makes it easier than plugging and unplugging from a recepatcle when the chair is charged. Hope this helps

How can I determine whether the on-board charger is working?

The m51 is notorious for failure of the on-board charger. An easy check would be to plug an off board charger into the 3 prong female charging receptacle at the front of the joystick to see if you can bring the voltage up. You can test the on board charger with a voltmeter at the battery connections or charger joystick port with the charger plugged in. Hope this helps

Where to plug in charger

The XLR plug plugs into the front of the Joystick. The hole in the front of the joystick looks like two eyes a nose. The XLR plug has three pins the only connect one way in the joystick. procedure is plug into the joystick first then plug the power cord into the outlet on the wall in your home. No extension cords please. This is an off board charge it means it is not mounted to the chair. Strege Mobility

Batteries quit charging. installed new batteries. new batteries will not charge

check at the rear of the chair when you plug in the on-board charger the meter shoud go up to indicate charging if the meter doesn't move recheck the battery installation to make sure that the wiring is correct I had one the other day that had crossed the connectors and was getting neg voltage instead of pos and the charger or the chair won't work. If the wiring is correct and you aren't getting a charge indication on the meter I would suspect the charger If you can borrow an offboard charger you can charge your chair through the joystick charger port under the front of the joystick until you can get a new charger. I would buy an offboard if you have to pay for it yourself it will be cheaper. Hope this helps

Where should the output from the charger be read?

Karrie if the chair has an on-board charger you can read the charger voltage at the charger port located under the front of the joystick. Set a meter to 200vdc and plug the leads into the two outter ports under the joystick Plug the charger into the wall socket and you should be able to read the charge voltage it should be 27-30 volts. If you have a off-board charger you will have to read the voltage at the batteries with the charger plugged into the the charger port under the joystick. Hope this helps

Sounds like you have a bad charger. If you have an on board charger, plug it in to the wall and test the voltage at the charger port at the front of the joystick between pins 1 and 2 (the two eyes of a happy face). If you get between 26 and 28 volts and the voltage rises as you charge, then the on-board charger is OK. If not check the AC cord and connections to the charger, including the lego black block and/or connection of the charger at the controller. The type of connection depends on year and serial number.
If you have an off -board charger plugged into the front of the joystick, check your voltage directly at the batteries with the seat flipped back. With the off-board charger plugged into the front of the joystick measure the voltage being applied to the batteries at the large black 2 pin plug coming from the controller to the batteries. When you take this measurement leave the plug connected and put your digital voltmeter probes in the connector at the back (non-contact side). With the charger on, voltage should read between 26 and 28 Volts or come to that voltage after some time.
On board chargers run about $200 and off board chargers around $300.
Invest in a good AC cord if yours is questionable. For $8, I have fixed many of these chargers with a new AC cord from Radio Shack. Hope this helps.

When i turn my chair on the joystick lights are all flashing like when it's plugged in. what does this mean?

The first thing you should do is to narrow down the problem you are experiencing, If the flash code looks like the flash code for the charger plugged in check to verify this at the following link:
http://www.pgdt.com/scenter/diagnostics/diagvsi.html
You either have a VSI controller or remote plus joystick with the Jazzy 1103 Ultra.
If you have an off-board charger unplug the charger and turn the chair off and on to clear the error code. If you have an on-board charger that is inhibiting the chair from driving you need to unplug it in the rear electronics area to see if that clears the error. If you have tracked the problem to the charger or charger wiring it is a matter of replacing that component. If you need further help after these initial steps I can provide more specific information if you post again. Hope this helps.

sounds like a charger inhibit problem. Whenever you charge your chair the charger inhibit shuts down the chair so it can't be moved while charging. If you are getting this then that function is not working. Lets try this if you know of someone who has a chair or scooter with an off-board charger see if you can borrow it. Plug the off-board charger into the charger port located under the front of the joystick (don't have the on-board charger plugged in) and then turn the charger on. turn the chair's power on and you hopefully will see the lights blinking again indicating a charger plugged in (charger inhibit) the lights on the charger should be red and yellow (yellow turning green when fully charged) If you still get the problem with the off-board charger then your problem is in the controller or power module and this requires a new one. If Medicare paid for your chair you can call Repair Xpress @ 1-877-81-3733 or Roadrunner Mobility @ 1-800-467-2668 to have them fix it for you and bill Medicare for most of the repair costs. Hope this helps you

May need a charger for my JET 3 power chair!..Is there any trouble-shooting techniques..befor I spend $240..for a charger?

lallman If you have a digital voltmeter set it to 200 volts dc and plug the leads into the two outter holes on the charger port located under the front od the joystick. with the charger unplugged you should be reading the battery voltage(if you haven't been chargind the batteries the voltage reading wil be low. Now with the leads still plugged in plug in your on-board charger into the outlet your reading should increase to between 26-30 volts on the meter. If you get no change in the reading then your charger is not working. Check the cable from the charger to the controller to insure its still plugged in If all the connections look ok the you nedd to replace the charger. I would look for a good off-board charger look on e-bay or ask around the neighborhood for anyone who might have an extra charger. Any good 3-4 amp charger will work to keep your batteries going. Lastly check with your local provider to have them order one for you about $120. Hope this helps

Its unusual for a charger that was working to stop working because you replaced the batteries. Does your chair operate correctly with the new batteries? If so then I would check the connection of the on-board charger at the controller box located in the front base section ahead of the batteries. Trace the cable from the charger to the controller and make sure it didn't come unplugged from the controller. Your red light on the charger would still light up but you would never charge the batteries. Now if you can locate an off board charger (borrow from a friend or neighbor that has one or borrow one from your local provider) plug it in the charger port located under the front of the joystick and see if the batteries will get fully charged that way. If you can't find any cable problems with the on-board charger and the off-board charger charges the batteries then there is a problem with the on-board charger or the charging system through the controller. It would be cheaper to purchase an off-board charger if the borrowed one works than try to replace the on-board charger. Hope this helps
