I would ask what kind of service was done on your system over the period of time from the time you first had it installed? Were there service calls for leaks in your system and were the leaks located and repaired ? When the first replacement compressor was installed was a filter dryer installed? Is your area subject to voltage variations? New condensing units normally are covered for five years on the compressor.

It seems that the cooling part of the air conditioner is working but the fan is not turning on. is this a major expense to fix?

If it's just a loose wire or a fault ON/Off Switch, it isn't that expensive to replace. However, finding the right part, may take some time. If the fan motor is shot, then that's a bit more expensive to repair. And, again finding the matching motor will take some time. If the unit is over 5 years old and it's a window or thru-wall AC unit, You may want to consider replacing it, with an upgraded model, that's energy star rated and has a good warranty,. With the option of purchasing an extended warranty. In the end, that can be money well spent. I almost always you Square Trade for extended warranty service. They run 25 to 30% less, than what the store offers and is just as good or better. If you want to check them out, you can find them online or call 1-877-WARRANTY

MY OUTSIDE CARRIER UNIT CLUNKS WHEN THE COMPRESSER SHUTS OFF

My CKC was doing the same thing and I thought it was the compressor slamming to a stop. Turns out it was the fan motor. I had a local company replace the motor and the sound is gone. That being said, it has now been replaced by blade vibration.. It just never ends!

Heatpump fan won't run. No noice, except for the compressor.

I'm assuming you can hear the compressor running. The following answer is based on the assumption that the compressor is running but the fan motor is not.

1. Make sure the motor is cooled down by shutting it off for a couple of hours.
2. Restart and immediately upon restart, try to spin the motor blade in it's normal direction.
After performing steps 1 & 2:
- if the motor starts spinning on it's own, it is one of two things: the capacitor or the bearings. If it is the bearings it is often-times difficult to start to spin the motor manually before it takes off. To check the bearings, turn all the power off to the unit....while holding the motor shaft, try to move it in all directions side-by-side (Not up & down). If the motor has any side-by-side movement, the bearings are bad.
- If the motor does not start spinning on it's own, does not feel difficult to turn at any time during the test and the bearings tested "okay", the problem is most likely electrical such as a wiring problem or failed relay. Check to ensure you have the proper voltage going to the motor. At this point, if you have limited experience with electrical motors and controls, it would be best to recruit help from a qualified service technician. Also, you want to look at your warranty on your unit. Many units today have a 5 year parts warranty; however, they have to be installed by a qualified A/C contractor for the parts warranty to be honored.

I hope this information helps you to better troubleshoot and understand your unit so that you can either continue to attempt the repair yourself or have a better idea of where to go for professional assistance. Good Luck! :-)

Tripping of AC after running good for hours.

CARRIER REQIRES AT LEAST 10 VOLTS OF DC POWER TO RUN THEMOSTAT FUNCTONS YOU ARE HAVEING A PROBLEM WITH YOUR CONVERTER OR INVERTER IF YOU HAVE A MOTOR HOME NOT PRODUCING ENOUGH DC VOLTS TO POWER THEMOSTAT FUNCTION I NOTICED YOU SAID YOU HAVE TWO ACS ON THE COATCH IF YOU HAVE A 3 PIN SOCKET YOU ONLY HAVE 30 AMP SERVICE KEEPING IN MIND YOUR AC REGUIRES 16 AMPS TO START AND 11 TO RUNS SO THAT WOULD BE
AC X 2 22 AMPS RUNING
WATER HEATER AC POWER 7 TO 8AMPS
REFER 10 AMPS ON ELETRIC MAX
CONVERTER DEPENDS ON BATEERY USE BUT I WOULD SAY 6 AMPS NORMAL USE WITH A GOOD DEEP CYCLE INSTALLED ON COATCH
I SEE OVER 40 AMPS WITH OUT ANY TVS OR MICO OR THE ALL IMPORTANT WIFES HAIR DRIER

AC fan motor keeps burning out bearings

Hopefully they have replaced the start and run capacitors for these motors and they are rated properly by voltage and microfarad specs. These capacitors properly start the motors during each run cycle and are a vital component to the motors well being and operation. Replace capacitors
