Question about Pass & Seymour #690WGCC6 15A White 2SP UL Switches

I have a 1-pole toggle switches. I have 2 wires, 1 runs bath fan, 1 runs lights in bath. So there are 3 wires running into the box. All 3 have black, white and a ground wire. How do I hook them up so the top switch runs lights and the bottom runs fan?

1st thing you need to do is wire nut the white wires together. Then you need to wire nut the ground wires together. Once that is done then you can push them into the box.

Now you will need to find the hot wire that is the one that supplies the power to the box. To do this you need a tester like on the link below.

Once you have found the hot wire you will need to attach it to the switch the side that has the gold screws.

The other two wires takes the power to the fan and light. You will need to find the one that runs the light and put it on the top screw on the other side of the switch. The last wire you will put on the bottom screw on the same side of the switch that you put the light wire.

Separate 1 switch 3 lights


You need separate wire going to each light.

Single pole and 3 pole to control each light separately: must identify black wire to each light. If each light does not have separate black wire inside the switch box, then it is not possible.

The Casablanca 88U33M Scandia Ceiling Fan only has three wires, a black, a white, and a green wire (ground). How do you wire the fan and light on seperate switches?


If you want to control both the light and the fan using 3-ways, then just wire 2 sets of the 3-way circuits. For this you need two sets of 3-wire between the switches, and one 3-wire cable from the switch location to the fan/light box.

At box #1 (a 2 gang box), you will run a power cable (marked cable #1) into it. From there you run 2 sets of 3-wire cables (identified as cable #2 & cable #3) to the other switch location, which will also be a 2-gang box (box #2).

Also from box #1, you will run a 3-wire cable (cable #4) to the fan/light box (box #3).

Hook up is as follows:

Box #3: connect black of cable #4 to black (fan), connect red of cable #4 to blue (light), connect white of cable #4 to white (fan/light), and connect the bare to the green.

Box #2: Connect white of cable #2 to identified terminal on 1st 3-way switch (#3). Connect red & black of cable #2 to the remaining screws of 3-way switch #3. Next connect white of cable #3 to identified terminal of 2nd 3-way switch (#4), and connect black and red to remaining screws. Tie all grounds together and terminate to both switches.

At box #1, connect black from cable #1 to whites in cables #2 & #3, using a wirenut. Connect white in cable #1 to white in cable #4. Connect black and red in cable #2 to 3rd 3-way switch (#1) and connect black and red in cable #3 to 4th 3-way switch (#2). Connect black in cable #4 to identified terminal of 3-way switch #1, and connect red in cable #4 to identified terminal on 3-way switch #2. Tie all grounds together and to the switches

Wiring is not fully described: Location of hot wire and neutral wire from breaker box are unknown.
If Hot wire arrives in ceiling box first, the switch box will not have white neutral wires that are twisted together and covered with wire nut. Neutrals will be in ceiling box.

What is known: You are replacing single pole switch attached to one 14-2 wire going to light.
You are replacing light with a fan-light and replacing switch with a 3-pole TM8111 switch.
You have replaced 14-2 wire with 12-3 wire.

Assume neutrals in ceiling box.
Assume Hot wire in ceiling box: Connect 12-3 black wire to black Hot wire. Connect 12-3 white wire to black wire on light. Connect 12-3 red to red wire on fan.
White neutral from fan and white neutral form light connect to other white neutral wires and covered with wire nut.
Wiring at switch:
Black Hot wire from ceiling box connects to A COM terminal.
White wire to ceiling light connects to A SP2
Red wire to fan connects to A SP1

The information is a bit sketchy, and you can add a comment with more information.

1) You have a triple switch with dark screw
(s) on one side of device.
You know that Hot attaches to dark screw.
On opposite side of switch are 3 screws.
1 screw is for wire going to bath fan.
1 screw is for wire going to bath light.
1 screw is for wire going to separate light above mirror.
If you do not have a separate wire running to each Load, then you need to add a wire.

2) If I understand correctly, your wall box contains several cables
Each cable has a black and white wire.
Ground wires are twisted together and connected to green screw, and are not discussed.

3) Cable1 black and white are Hot and Neutral from breaker box.
Are you sure?
Test each wire in box to bare ground to find hot wire.
Test hot wire to each wire to find neutral wire.
If power comes from junction box on ceiling, wall box might not have neutral wire.
If neutral wire was used to complete circuits for previous switch, then it is used the same for new switch. That's where the information is sketchy.

You have 4 white wires
1 white goes to each load
1 white is neutral
Where are the black wires associated with these white wires?
Add a comment and say how many cables and where each wire was connected before.

Here's how to start.
Connect Hot to dark screw.
One at a time, connect each white to screw on other side of switch.
Turn on power and flip the switch.
If load turns ON, then that wire is correct.
If load does not turn ON, then leave switch ON. Test each of the other white wires to bare ground to see if this wire should connect to neutral. Then connect that wire to neutral and test switch again.

If I understand correctly you are installing two wall switches.
Your switches are switch1 and switch2
Each switch has 2 brass-colored screws
If you have a double switch, see page bottom
And you are installing a fan/light combo with separate wires for fan and light.

Bare ground wires and green wires connect to each other and to green screw. A ground wire runs from fan/light to switch box where it connects to other bare copper wire and these wires will not be discussed.

Lets work from the fan/light down to the switch.

Blue-wire-fan connects to either brass screw on switch1
White-wire-fan connects to white Neutral (we'll talk about this wire as we go)

Black-wire-light connects to either brass screw on switch2
White-wire-light connects to same Neutral as White-wire-fan.

So you need 3 wires running from fan/light to your switch box.
One wire arrives at switch box and connects to brass screw on switch1
One wire arrives at switch box and connects to brass screw on switch2
One wire is the Neutral wire and it arrives at switch box and connects to other white wires inside switch box. Twist these wires together and cover with wire nut.

Now your white Neutral is connected to other white wires in switch box.
Each switch still needs another wire.

The Hot black wire from breaker box connects to brass screw on both switches

If you have a double switch, with 2 switches stacked vertically.
The screw colors can be different.
Double switch could have brass screws on both sides, in which case your Load (fan-light) wires connect on one side of device, and your Hot from breaker connects to other side. It doesn't matter which side, but loads on one side, hot on other side.
Double switch could also have dark screw(s) on one side and brass screws on other side.
In this case, the black Hot from breaker connects to dark-colored screw(s)
And your Load (fan-light) connect to brass colored screws.

How to install a dimmer switch


This is a 3-way switch, made to control a light fixture that is also controlled by another switch in a different location. A typical example is a ceiling light fixture installed in an upstairs hallway, which could be controlled by switches at both top and bottom of the staircase.

The green wire in your switch is the ground connection, and joins to the green insulated or bare copper ground wire in the switch box. The red wire is the common connection. It connects either to the incoming AC hot wire from the electric panel, or to the hot terminal of the light fixture, depending on the switch location. The two black wires are traveller connections. They connect to the traveller terminals of the other 3-way switch.

If you purchased this switch as a replacement for a regular single-pole toggle switch or dimmer switch - one that controls a light from a single location only - then this isn't what you need and you can't use it. You'll know if you have a single-pole switch because it will have only three wires or screw connections. Return it and get a single-pole.

To install this as a replacement for a 3-way toggle switch or dimmer, connect the red wire to the wire going to the common terminal of the original switch. This will be a black- or brass-colored screw on a toggle switch, or the different-colored (not green, that's ground) wire on a dimmer. The black wires connect to the wires that go to the traveller screws (copper-colored) on a toggle switch, or the same-colored wires on a dimmer. It doesn't matter which traveller wire connects to which.

Note that if you're using a 3-way dimmer, only one of the switches can be a dimmer. The other switch has to be a plain old 3-way toggle.

I have a live 2-wire line that used to be connected to a light with a switch built into the light fixture. I removed the fixture and put wire nuts on the live wire. What I'm trying to do is to wire the 2...


As I understand it you have a live circuit going to a light fixture that had a switch built into it. You have removed the fixture and now you want to run this wire to another location and install a switch in the circuit.

You will be extinding these two wires (white and black + ground) to the new location. No problem ... Somewhere between where you start and where you finish, you will break the black wire and install a single pole switch. All connecctions must happen inside a electrical box.

So, install the new wire in the box where you will start your extension. Run to the new switch box. You dont even have to cut the white wire. You will wrap the green or ground around the ground screw on the switch, Cut the black wire . put one end under one side screw, put the other end under the other side screw. From this box run your wire to the next box where you will install your fixture.

If you are using metal boxes, they must be grounded to the circuit. You can use pig tails for this, Best deal is to use plastic boxes that dont require grounding.

How to wire 3 switches in a 3 gang box


WARNING: Do not attempt to do this work unless you completely understand the information provided below. If in doubt call an electrician.
Always make sure the power is disconnected from all possible sources before making any connections. Your description of the problem indicates that there may be multiple power wires coming into the same box. In that case local codes may require that the box be partitioned to prevent exposure to voltages up to 220 volts.
You need to determine where each wire goes to know how to connect them together. You cannot rely on color alone. If the power supply runs through the box to the loads then most (but probably not all) of the white wires will be connected together. If the power runs to the load boxes first then none of the white wires in the switch box should be connected together. They are used to run the switched/dimmed power back to the loads (and should be taped to cover the white in the box). In that case each switch has its own power input and they should not be tied together. A wire (could be black or white with black tape) brings power from the load box, gets connected to the input terminal of the switch and the corresponding black wire carries the switched power back to the load. The fan/light switch will have one power in and a switched power out for the fan and another for the light. The 3-way will have one "power" in (or it could be the final power out to the light) and two "carrier wires that connect to the other 3-way switch. If the power supply goes through the switch box then there will be at least 10 wires in that box. In that case see the attached diagram: a5fa64a.gif

Wiring to a 3 single pole combination switch


run 14-2 wire to power switches, then run one 14-3 wire and one 14-2 up to fixture..you will have an extra neutral but its okay... just tie all nuetrals together....this gives you the needed 3 hot wires!
