How do you get the pictures off your card before you format it?

  • zento Mar 30, 2009

I had this same problem with a Kingston SD card, so thought maybe the card was screwey since it had it's good years of usange on it.  I bought a new Transcend SD card and after about 3 minutes of taking test shots with the new card, some of the images began to get corrupted again with the message "Unidentified Image".  I formatted the new card and will test some more in a bit.  But if it's not a card issue (which I'm beginning to suspect), could there be something wrong with my camera (which by the way, is also new)?

Usually the only time this message will appear is when you have taken the picture with another camera and try to review it on another. If this is not the issue, try formatting your card. Try another card. It may be a faulty memory card. If none of this works, call Canon tech support for free support.

I cannot view the pictures i have taken - shows as "Unidentified Image". Have tried to reset settings (in case we altered something to cause this) - can nyou advise?

Usually this happens if you used the memory card on another camera, or you are trying to open an image shot from another camera.

Sd card won't upload video- 'unidentified image' is displayed

iPhoto is for still pictures. iMovie is for videos. Use a card reader to download your videos to a folder you create on your desktop. From there, you can import to iMovie or just play them using Quicktime.

Unidentified image, image too large

Try formatting the memory card (or changing it). You probably have some bad sectors.

If this does not help, take the camera to a Canon dealer, it's probably a software problem

I have the same problem w/ my canon ixus 100IS.UNIDENTIFIED IMaGE

Try using a card reader to download your pics. Also, go to a store like Walmart that has a Kodak picture maker machine. You should be able to see all of your pics and print them or even make a cd of them.

You think you can try photo recovery software to see if you can rescue the lost photos or movies, here are some you may rely on. Both programs can also recover videos and music.

Photo Recovery Software (for Windows)
Mac Photo Recovery Software (for Mac OS X)

Be careful: Before your pictures and videos are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the memory card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

Unidentified Images.

I would try formating the card using the camera (menu - setup - format) - THIS WILL ERASE ALL THE PICTURES YOU CURRENTLY HAVE ON YOUR CARD, so before you do this you may want to get a memory card reader and transfer the pictures (click and drag) to your computer. As to using the 4GB card...you will have to check with canon if a card that size if compatable. Not all cameras work with SD cards larger than 2GB.

Canon SD850 IS showing "unidentified image" after pic is taken

we have just experienced both of the above problems. We are using 2G SD card from Kingston. After about 400 pictures set to mdeium resolution we get many pictures with the ? mark unidentified image. I see that each image takes up about 2M of space but the image information is not stored so you can not open the file. Also other images have the shaded problem as above.

does anyone have any ideas about this. Is it the camera or the SD memory? We just bought the camera about 3 weeks ago and are now thinking of returning it
