Question about Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop
I am having problems with my dvd/cd drive. each time i put in a dvd or cd it won;t work. i orginally was removing programs with control panel (in hopes of speeding up computer due to alot of internet programs freezing). since that time, i have done restoring to a restoration point as well as an entrie pc recovery. both have given me no success in fixing this issue. i then tried to go into safe mode and uninstall, then install this driver as well as returning to default bios. still no result.
as such i;m curious as to if there is something else that can be done, or if it would just make more sense to get a whole new cd drive at the store
If you put the dvd/cd in the drive and hear it spinning, it may not be the drive. Check your device manager to see if any drivers are missing. Right-Click on My Computer > Manage > Device Manager. If you see anything with a yellow ! or a red X than you may have a driver issue. If not, than it could possibly be the physical cables and/or connections. If you are comfortable enough to open up the case, try replugging in the drive at both ends to make sure you have a good connection.
If all else fails, it may have just been a coincidence that the drive failed when you did your cleanup. Disc drives are rather cheap these days too, so you don't have to worry about spending an arm and a leg on a new one. Let me know how you make out.

Tips for a great answer:
Feb 22, 2013 | Dell Studio XPS 8000 (DXCWKW12) PC Desktop
Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.
It could be a problem with the lens you could use a liquid type lens cleaner place 2-3 drops on top of a cd/dvd then run it if this fails you might try cleaning the lens it's already gone bad there is no harm in trying If you take a little risk can solve . follow the instruction: Don't panic its very simply. 1.
