The device is a SONY USB Thumb Drive. When plugged in the a USB port it reads as an UNKNOWN DEVICE. How can I access the files to remove or copy and reformat the thumb drive?

  • father_moe Oct 06, 2010

your solution came close "but no Cigar !!". The device was used to transfer files from PC to PC. It may have been unplugged during a "writte" in progress. Is there a utility that can access the device and copy off what is there?

  • father_moe Oct 06, 2010

    1. Can nt access drive AT ALL
    2. It is a SONY 2 Gb. thumb drive
    3. It was tried on 4 different computers with "unknown device" popping up when plugged in
    4. . I need a utility that will acess "Unknown Devices". I was told about roadkill raw copy but it didn't find the drive. My suspicion is that it was pulled out during a "write" and corrupted the drive. If I can get by the initial corrupt file the rest should be easy.

  • father_moe Oct 06, 2010

Thanks for the ideas but nothing SEES the thumb drive. I guess I will tell my client/user to replace it and kiss his files goodbye.

Thanks. I guess this question is closed.

Can you access the thumb drive at all? Do you have the make and model of the thumb drive? Does it work on other computers currently? Once I have more information I can assist you further.
Thank you,
Lee

If you have corrupted it,then it isn't that easy. If the drive is under warranty I would have it repaired under warranty. If you absolutely need to retrieve data from it visit a recovery specialist like this:
    http://www.eprovided.com/repair-usb-thum...
Being that a 2gb thumb drive is only about 6$ I would just replace it. There is a ton of troubleshooting you can do for this problem here is a link that lists all of them.
    http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic122125.h...
If that doesn't work you will need a recovery specialist.
    Thank you,

This is why I always stress to my customers/clients that backing up data means that the data is available in more then one place. It's not backed up if there is only one copy of it. With how cheap thumb drives are, buy two and copy the data twice. And also make sure to use the "safely remove hardware" feature when using the thumb drives.

that is the most economical route. Also with the other information/tips I gave you, you can avoid the loss of data in the future.

Hello

The device come up as Unknown when the connector is broken, there are 4 pins, one of them is not touching the board inside the stick properly.

This might be fixable by making sure the 4 pins are soldered properly to the board and none of them are cut.

If the memory stick works on another computer right now, then that is not the issue. Follow this page to re-install the usb adapters on the computer http://www.fixya.com/support/r569923-usb_devices_not_recognised_or_not

Unfortunately if the device is listed as Unknown device in device manager, then the recovery programs will not work. The device needs to be regocnized in order for any recovery software to work.

Right now it is unsable until you can get it regocnized again.

One thing that might help and it might make this much worse, would be to bend the usb plug a bit. It might connect the pins properly to the board, or it might make it worse.

another solution is to resolder the 4 pins coming from usb connector into the small circuit board of the memory stick.

but ofcourse you can try filescavenger, the software that I've been using for years. but I don't think its going to work- try the free TRIAL, no need to purchase anything.

I'm sorry if the device is not regocnized it comes up as unknown device, there is noting you can do to recover any files until you get it regocnized. aside from taking it to a data recovery professional.

The device does not have a device driver: When a device driver for a device is not available, Device Manager displays the device as Unknown Device and puts it in the Other devices branch. This is very common with universal serial bus (USB).
Most USB and IEEE 1394 devices function correctly without additional device drivers because they are configured by the drivers that are included with Windows for these bus types. However, an additional device driver is needed if the device does not fit the defined and supplied Windows class drivers. If the bus cannot identify the device, it interprets the device as a composite device and then reports it as such in Device Manager.
iF yOUR usb is working fine dont worry about it.
When you install a non-Plug and Play device, the resource settings for the device are not automatically configured. Depending on the type of device that you are installing, you may have to manually configure these settings. Instructions for doing so should be supplied in the manual that came with your device
If it is not working folloe these steps :
To configure devices:
Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. Double-click the type of device you want to change.
Double-click the specific device you want to change. If the device has resources settings that you can change, the Resources tab is visible.
Click the Resources tab, and then click to clear the Use automatic settings check box. This check box might be unavailable if you have selected a non-Plug and Play device.
In Setting based on, click the hardware configuration you want to change.
In the Resource settings box, click the resource type you want to change in the Resource type column.
Click Change Setting, and then type a new value for the resource type.
NOTE: Repeat the preceding steps as necessary.

If you mean no file size showing up in "Add / Remove Programs"
thats because it's integrated / uninstallable but registered.

Error: 0x80070005, is that when you access "Microsoft Update"?

As for repairing SP3 Read more here:

OS Matter

Nope.

Without the disk you cannot upgrade to Windows XP Pro, because both Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional are two different edition / version.

So if you want to upgrade your current operating system from Windows XP Home then you have to spend money to buy Windows XP Pro

But if you want to upgrade the Service Pack then you can very well do it.

Click the link below to download Windows XP SP3 for your edition and install it. Before installing it make sure you have turned off your security programs or better install it from the SafeMode
