Onkyo TA-207 3-head cassette deck

I own an Onkyo TA-207 cassette deck and it is a wonderful machine. Recently, it developed an intermittent take-up reel problem. The take-up reel will randomly stop. The deck senses the problem and automatically stops. If I put in a tension gauge and press play or fast-forward, the gauge will show the proper tension. Could there be a cold solder joint or other similar problem causing this? I do not have a manual or schematic.

My deck does not use belts for the take-up and feed reel. It has direct motor drive and gears. Only the capstan uses a belt and that part is working properly.

The gearing and rubber parts involved in FF or REW vs. play are different. This unit should be overhauled and all of the rubber parts replaced.

In that case, it is quite possible that either the motor driver IC is faulty or that the motor itself has a dead spot. The motor driver IC will probably be marked LBxxxx. There should be 2 or three of these. Try swapping them to see if the problem moves. If it does, the IC is defective. If the problem remains, the motor is the likely suspect here.

    Keep us posted.

As i no longer own any cassettes i was wondering if it is possible to disconect the cassette deck from the rest of the system?

Stero systems like yours consisting of several parts is complicated considering connectivity. For the convenience of storage and intergrity to diconected parts would be beneficial only power off from main circiuits. Unless the need to repack into device case arises. mean while, the option of diconnecting competly still remains available.

Am trying to hook up an older kenwood home stereo system and dont know where all of the wires go. There is a model #kt-87synthesizer, km-207 amplifier, double cassette kx-77cw, stereo control amp kc-207...

Okay you are going to need 5 sets of RCA cables of 3 foot lengths. Ensure the KM-207 is adequately ventilated unless you want to burn up the KM-207. Next you will want to place the KC-207 near the KM-207 and connect the "Output to Amp" from the KC-207 to the "Input" to the KM-207. Now you may stack the KX-77CW, the DP-M97 and the KT-87 Tuner in no particular order. I tend to place them sideways so I may access them just in case I don't like how it is set up. Unless I can access them from the back. "Output" or "Play" from the DP-M207 goes into the "CD Input" in the back of the KC-207. "Output" or "Record" on the KC-207 "Tape 1" goes into the "Input or "Record" on the KX-77CW. "Output"or "Play" on the KX-77CW goes into the "Input" or "Play" on the "Tape 1" of the KC-207. "Output" on the KT-87 Tuner goes into the "Tuner Input" on the KC-207. Here is a trick to help you new stuff uses color codes such as White or Blue RCA cable ends, and Red RCA cable ends to indicate White or Blue for Left channel and Red for Right channel. Now you didn't indicate how to hookup speakers so I will not assume you are concerned about anything but using headphones for listening. I hope this has been of assistance.

Tape Deck in Car

Sounds like a poor "connection" between the cassette head and the head in the adaptor.

This could be caused by either head being dirty, or the tape head may be mis-alligned.

You can clean the heads with a proprietary head cleaning fluid.

Check with a standard tape.

Also, if your head unit supports it, switch the auto-reverse control. Some adaptors have dual heads for auto-revers decks, and some only have a single head.

Open the cassette deck and use a pen to push down the heads. After this it probably works better to avoid using cassettes in this machine.

Hi.
Better quality cassette decks use this method as it puts less strain on the motor because it dosen't have to keep starting and stopping.
