I am having the same problem. there is a little plate below that says "FCC TRANSMITTER" w/ three screws. i found it was damaged this morning, and once removed, it works fine. there is something under there that screws with the image sent from the video if something touches it. try removing the plate, and cleaning under there. me, i'm going to buy a new plate to replace the damaged one. it's mazing how finnickey computer guts are.

I have the same problem, tried to connect an external monitor, on boot, matrix like grid lines appeared still, (on the external monitor). This means it must be something inside the laptop.

Any ideas?
This is my only real source of work.
Right now i'm using my home made server to communicate with the the world which isn't the best solution.

Thanks Guys.

First, plug a external monitor ant toggle the screen to see if it displays correctly. This will discard software or configuration issues.
If the external monitor works correctly the problem is in the LCD screen.
You can find replacement LCD screens here:

It seems the connector is partially removed,
If you are able try to remove the monitor bezel, and look the connector. Usually is a easy to unplug it.
I have replace a complete monitor from another model of DELL, and is not necessary ro open all laptop to check this)
Look on that:

I have recently replaced my hp 4530s screen now computer wont start

A) Which method did you use?
The one straight out of the Service Manual, or this style?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxlSn2LcV_w

If the style above, suggest you do not have the Video Cable plugged in tight, to the the back of the LCD screen; and/or webcam cable.

If the style straight out of the HP Service Manual,
I can go down a long list;

1) Didn't follow Anti-Static Procedures, and Static shocked out the delicate hardware components for the laptop.

Laptop is junk now.

2) Didn't get the Power Button Board, Flat Flex Cable (FFC);

Inserted back into the correct direction. You may have it flipped upside down.
You may not have the FFC slid in all the way.
You may have forgotten to even connect it.

Fortunately a fairly common thing, so I will not deduct you two computer geek points for that. (lol!)

I'm going to stop, and wait for you to tell me which method you used, and also if you FOLLOWED Anti-Static Procedures.

Post back in a Comment.

Video artifacts during boot

It's related to either the lcd video cable and or the lcd.and or the gpu. I'd say in that order.

NOT the inverter. The inverter only controls screen brightness.

Matrix Style Lines

Yes, this could be a property value set in your display. Go to Control Panel, Display and hunt through your display adapter's advanced settings and see if there is a check box for display grid and turn that off.

Vertical lines in middle screen

The screen has a broken circuit in it somewhere, which is what will cause thes lines. You could take to a repair shop, and have them fix it, or call the manufacturer and tell them it is defective, and they will send you a new one for FREE!!!!

Gateway laptop vertical dotted lines across the screen

Sounds like a problem with the LCD assembly or cable. You may want to reseat the LCD cable at the LCD end. It could be a loose internal connector in the LCD assembly.
