My husqvarna will crank if its on choke but will not idal and will only run on choke but for a few seconds how can I fix it

Fuel starvation, start by replacing the fuel filter in the fuel tank ( on the end of the fuel hose ) check the fuel hose up to the carb for signs of cracks or leakage.

Starts but only runs for a few seconds. Can put choke back on, pull a few times and it starts again. Put choke in off position and it will run for a few more seconds reviving the engin then dies.

This is fuel starvation, start by replacing the fuel filter in the fuel tank, check the fuel hoses up to the carb for signs of leaking or cracks, if this does not help, then there is a fuel screen in the carb, it is situated ubder the fuel pump cover, this is the alluminium cover held with a single screw, you may be able to remove this cover without removing the carb, depends on the orientation of the carb on the machine.

I have a Poulan 18in/38cc (50 th anniversary model) chain saw it was a work horse. I cannnot get it started. I removed the old fuel and added new and changed the spark plug and set the gap at 25...

You have not actually said what model this is, however, it souds very much like fuel starvation, main things to check are, the filter on the end of the fuel hose in the tank, replace this as a matter of course, now check all the fuel hoses up to the carb, any signs of cracking or fuel leakage and the hoses will require replacment. The oil pump is normally behind the clutch and sprocket, there will be a gear arrangement here whish needs checking, there will also be a pick up hose and filer behind the pump, this may well need cleaning
Let us know how you get on.

Hard start, lack of power when accelerating, back fireing when floored

I think you may need to replace your EGR valve. If you have a 318 with a Holley 2280 2 Barrel Carb, the EGR is to the right of the choke flap. It looks like a saucer and has one or maybe two hoses coming off it. One hose goes to the front of the carb and if there is a second it goes to the Distributor Vaccuum Advance. Make sure you put it on correctly and torque it down. If it sucks in air it will make your truck run HOT! Test with soapy water. Make sure you put the right gapper in your new valve, it will come with a few and a list. Keep your old EGR because you need the number off it to take with you to the parts store because they need to know it.

Put in new carb kit, starts but dies after a few seconds

If you removed the fuel lines from the primer bulb you may have reversed the lines. On two stroke engines the primer pulls gas through the carb it does not push gas into the carb. On the back of the primer bulb there are two hose barbs, one says in (in very small letters) this side goes to the carburetor and the other goes to your gas tank (it is a return line) This line is about a third to a half way up the side of your gas tank, not at the bottom where the fuel line is.

Idle runs too high when I come to a stop, for about 5 seconds.

The throttle body may need to be cleaned. Take off the induction hose to the throttle and open the plate. Make sure the vehicle is not running. With the throttle plate wide open, soak a cloth rag with carb and choke cleaner and work the rag around the inside of the body especially where the plate's closed position is. remove the rag and spray a small amount of carb cleaner down the throat of the throttle body. replace hose and run vehicle at 1500 rpm's for a few seconds. This should fix the idle. It should be idling at about 800 rpms.
