Question about Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator

1 Answer

I'm trying to do normal distributions on the TI83, I goto normalcdf and enter my values, -999999, 80, 69.0, 2.8) and hit enter but I get the error 1:Quit/2:Goto. If I select Goto, it highlights the " - " or negative as a the problem. How can I fix this so that I can enter negative values?

Don't use the - key. This is for subtracting one number from another. Use the (-) key to the right of the decimal point.

I have a possible glitch. If I use the negative (+/-) key BEFORE hitting enter, the number is made negative as it should be. But for whatever reason, AFTER I hit enter, it displays only -0. If I hit...

I doubt that it has a glitch. Although possible, it is not very probable. Try to use the calculator correctly.
Follow the algebraic logic.
If you did not input any value the answer memory contains the value 0.
When you press (+/-) followed by [=] it takes the value in answer memory and negates it, thus giving you (-0).
Adopt a consistent way of inputting numbers, namely always enter the negation sign before the number that is negated. The calculator will enclose the negated number between parentheses, which prevents may errors. Too bad this feature has not been kept in more recent calculators by Sharp.

That is what I get with your numbers on the TI84 Plus Silver Edition 0.1870313608. I get the same on the TI83 Plus. What can I say?. Apart from an error entering the numbers ( a 6 for a 9, a 3 for an 8) I cannot think of anything else. Sorry.

2nd vars 2 (normalcdf( -999999,-.1923) Just trying to get area from z value -.0.1923 keep getting errors

The normalcdf function takes three arguments: the z value, the mean, and the standard deviation. In the "standard" case the mean is 0 and the standard deviation is 1. Thus, try calculating
normalcdf(-.1923, 0, 1) .

Error message with binopdf function

Yes, eleven million is rather extreme for the binomial distribution. For this large a value the binomial distribution is sufficiently indistinguishable from the normal approximation.
