Replacing the switch will require disassembling the camera and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Tape In light flashes every ~0.8 seconds even though no tape in there.

You have got yourself into a tricky mess there. The mechanism was set up in a certain way. When you extracted the tape, it sent the mechanism into the wrong position. There is also a switch called a mode switch that is linked to the mechanism and the electronics of the video. This switch tells the electronics what mode the video is in - IE: fast forward etc. This is now out of position and the whole mechanism needs to be set up in the correct position, assuming there is no faults, and so does the mode switch.
However the bad news is that unless you have the service manual you have little chance of setting it up right. Most video's for example are NOT set up in the eject position for a start, so unless you have the instructions, you will never get it to work right.

Err on display when insert tape, no functions work.

Two things. First there is some damage to the tape transport mechanism. Only a good look around will confirm this. Secondly a faulty mode switch.

I have a sony TC-660 reel to reel player, it had been in great condition, and i love using it. All of a sudden however, the reels will ONLY move in one direction (clockwise for the left, and counter...

In order to maintain tape control and tension the reels always pull lightly in opposite directions during PLAY mode. The capstan moves the tape in the desired direction at a precise speed. If the capstan doesn't engage the tape BETWEEN itself and the pinch roller you'll get the reels battling over control of the tape. Check the tape routing.

Need help

I have the same problem. A workaround may be to take the tape out, turn on again, swith to "card P.B." mode, load tape in while in this mode, switch back to camera mode.
This seemed to solve it (temporarily?) for my NV-DS38.

As it's a DV (Digital Video) camera you should use the IEEE 1394 Firewire socket if it has one. Then use a DV capture program.
If you dont have a Firewire port on your PC you can buy a card like this one which will connect you Camera to your PC.

My camera function is not working

It could be that the tape heads are dirty. You should try cleaning them with a 8mm tape cleaner. Radio Shack carries them.

Record button doesn't function

You may want to check the record lockout safety switch located on the tape. This button can get moved by accident and the camera will refuse to record on that tape. Also, be sure the camera is in "video" mode, not "photo" mode. Some of Canons camcorders have a digital still camera mode which stops the camcorder from functioning because the photos are being recorded to a memory card and not your tape, please check this swithc as well. Good luck. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org
