Question about WatchGuard Technologies Watchguard Firebox Edge X20e (WG017351) Firewall

Open Question

I am trying to configure a Firebox Edge X 20e Evidently, the person who first hooked it up used the initial setup wizard found by logging into the device at https://192.168.111.1. He does not know what password/user name he put in. So, I did a hard reset of the box and attempted to login through the same 192.168.111.1. I cannot get it to accept the user name/password default. Thank you.

I have a Watchguard Firebox x10e and i can not log into it

To recover your Firebox X Edge e-Series device, you must first reset the Edge to its factory default settings, and then FTP the Edge v10.x appliance software to the Edge.
To set the Firebox X Edge e-Series to the factory default settings:
  1. Disconnect the power supply.
  2. Hold down the Reset button on the rear side of the Edge.
  3. Connect the power supply while you continue to hold down the Reset button.
  4. Continue to hold down the button until the yellow Attn light stays on. This shows you that the Edge was successfully restored to the factory default settings.
This process can take 45 seconds or more.
To FTP the Edge v10.x appliance software to the Edge:
  1. Copy the Edge v10 upgrade file (yakfw.sysa-dl) to the root of your C: drive.
  2. Edit the network settings on your computer so that it is part of the 192.168.111.0/24 subnet.
  3. Connect your computer to any of the LAN interfaces on the Edge.
  4. Open a command prompt.
To open a command prompt, select Start > Run. Type cmd and press Enter.
  5. Type ftp 192.168.111.1 and press Enter. When prompted, enter the user name admin and the password admin. Press Enter.
  6. Type bin. Press Enter.
  7. Type put yakfw.sysa-dl. Press Enter.
  8. Type bye. Press Enter.
  9. Type exit. Press Enter.
    The command prompt window closes.
  10. Power cycle the Edge.

What is *.ini files ? how can i create it ? what is the use of it ?

.INI files are plain-text files that contain configuration information. These files are used by Windows and Windows-based applications to save information about your preferences and operating environment. "INI" stands for initialization.
Format of .INI Files.INI files contain one or more sections. Each section begins with a section name, which is followed by zero or more entries. An entry associates a keyname with a value. The general format is:

[section]
keyname=value

Comments can also be included in the file by prefacing the comment with a semicolon (;).

Windows and Windows for Workgroups use several standard .INI files for storing configuration information. These files are WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI, PROTOCOL.INI, PROGMAN.INI, CONTROL.INI, WINFILE.INI, MSMAIL.INI, SHARED.INI, and SCHDPLUS.INI. Windows-based programs may also add sections and entries to WIN.INI, and they may add .INI files in the Windows directory.

Editing .INI FilesBecause .INI files use only plain text, they can be edited using any text editor or word processor. .INI Master also has a built-in text editor for making corrections in the .INI files you are diagnosing.

To create a custom Setup.ini file:
  1. Start the Setup INI Customization Wizard.
  2. Type the path to your Office XP administrative installation point, and then click Next. The wizard searches the specified network share for a Setup.ini file.
  3. From the administrative installation point, select an INI file on which to base your custom INI file. Or, click Browse to go to a different location and select a file. Click Next.
  4. Under Logging, select a logging mode, and then type a name for the log file or template. Click Default to use the logging mode that is specified in the INI file. Click Verbose to use all logging options. Note that verbose logging creates very large log files.
  5. Under Display, select a default display setting, and then click Next. The wizard searches the administrative installation point for additional packages (MSI files) that you can chain to the Office installation.
  6. Select the check boxes next to the packages that you want to include in your custom INI file, add packages or programs (EXE files) that are stored in another location, and then click Next.
  7. Use the arrow keys to determine the order in which you want Setup.exe to install the chained packages. The System Files Update package is always installed first (if required), followed by the Office XP package. You can change the order in which subsequent chained packages are installed.
  8. Select each package, specify the options that you want for that package, and then click Next. For each package, you can specify an MST file and a unique display setting, as well as additional property values.
  9. To add additional property-value pairs to your custom INI file, select a package, click Advanced Properties, type the properties and values that you want, and then click Next. The wizard displays a summary of the changes to save in the custom INI file.
  10. Click Save As, and then type a name and path for your INI file. The wizard supplies a sample Setup command line that specifies your custom INI file with the /settings option.
  11. Click Finish to quit the wizard.

Setup wizard doesn't locate wireless router.

Any old ethernet cable should be fine. The setup disc is generally used only for initial setup to establish communications between router and pc, and to also configure your internet providers settings. You can access your router from your pc by going to http://192.168.1.1 and you can change settings in the router from there instead of using setup disc. If you insist on using the setup wizard disc you usually have to set your computer's ip address to a specific number and possibly reset router to default state (see manual or http://www.linksys.com).

How do I set up my Linksys router?

Physical Setup of a LinkSys Router Each model of LinkSys router will differ slightly, but the general design is similar across all models. Therefore, the setup is similar across all models.
  1. Attach the antennas to the router (if your LinkSys router support wireless)d
  2. Plug the Ethernet cable from your broadband Internet provider into the port labeled "Internet"
  3. Plug another Ethernet cable into one of the available ports
  4. Plug the other end of that same cable into an Ethernet port on your PC
LinkSys Router Configuration LinkSys routers now ship with a Setup Wizard which is intended to simplfy basic configuration tasks.
We do not recommend the LinkSys Setup Wizard for two reasons:
  1. The Setup Wizard is not significantly easier that the regular configuration menus
  2. If you use the Setup Wizard, you will end up learning two interfaces for your LikSys router instead of just one
Instead, we recommend simply starting your web browser and jumping into the configuration.
Once your web browser is open, go to the URL http://192.168.1.1/. This will take you to a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password.

Logging in to a LinkSys Router
The username is either blank or "admin" and the default password is "admin".
Once you are past the login screen, you are able to access (and change) a plethora of configuration options for your router.
Don't be worried by the enormous number and variety of options, your LinkSys router ships with default settings that enable it to work right out of the box in most environments.
From here the configuration options that you choose are largely up to your own personal preference.
If this is a wireless router, we recommend that you consider setting an SSID to identify the router as your own and configuring WEP to encrypt your wireless traffic.

Setting up a VPN through watchguard

The key with any VPN solution is to make sure that the configurations on both ends match. I am not very familiar with this particular product, but it looks like you need to have the proper VPN licenses installed first. There are two types of VPN you can do. 1) Site to Site - This is where the are two static boxes that you want to create an encrypted tunnel between 2) Remote User access - This is where mobile users connect to a central site over an encrypted tunnel from their home or on the road. Next, take a looks at the User Guide PDF here: https://www.watchguard.com/help/documentation/soho6.asp Chapter 10 tells how to configure the VPN on the Firebox side. You would just duplicate your settings if your doing option #1. Chapter 11 tells how to configure the VPN on the client side. This section would tell you how to configure the client software for option #2. Hope this helps.
