Dark picture means you have low brightness on the screen. Please increase the brightness. Also try increasing the back light intensity.

Display is very dark and can barely be viewed. Brightness controls don't do anything. Any suggestions? It is a Dell latitude 505.

Sounds like the back light has gone.
You may be lucky and you just have a loose connection, its worth taking the front off the screen surround and re-seating all conectors.
If it is the backlight, you can get a replacement quite cheap (£10)

Replace the laptop. Alternatively, replace the LCD for it, the backlight is dead. Quite franly, the former is cheaper.

Barely able to see screen.

Your screen or the inverter underneath it which controls the power to the screen is bad.

Is the screen just dark s that you can barely see what's on it, or is it completely blacked out?

Screen really dark

Did the screen come that dark, or did it go dark recently? Backlight may have burned up, panel may be bad. Had a similar occurance with a Creative Zen- can't fix these things. All you can really do is return it.
