From what I understand, the computer is running some flavor of Linux. You can either learn how to use Linux of install a version of Windows. You must know more about the original software that was installed (Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 or Win 8). You need to buy a licensed copy. Your Vista has already been installed on and activated for a specific computer, so it cannot legally be used on another computer.
Try Linux. Download a free distribution from the Internet (Ubuntu for example). Burn it on a CD. Configure your computer to boot from the CD-Rom. Run a demo of Linux (without installing) and see if it recognizes all your hardware. If it does you might decide to switch to Linux.

What is the Windows XP Administrator Password?

<p>Windows XP, the most popular versions of Windows, was widely installed by PC users. Do you remember after you installing your first copy of Windows XP, how long did it require you to realize that you didn't know the administrator password? I vaguely remembered that it was about a week before I needed to make some changes in the file system. It suddenly came to me to be logged on as an administrator, but I do not know the password of the administrator! <br /> <p> <br /> <p><img src="windows-xp-administrator-password.jpg" /> <p><br /> Luckily, Windows XP (both Home and Professional versions) have a "hidden" administrator account which is autogenerate when install. This account usually doesn't show up on the logon screen and most people are totally unaware of its existence. Usually it is ok because we didn't need to user this account very often, only when we don't know the administrator password, need access to the Windows XP recovery console or boot into Windows XP safe mode, the default <b>Windows XP administrator password</b> would come in handy.<br /> <p><br /> What is the Default Administrator Password in Windows XP?</b><br /> <p><br /> Knowing the default password of Windows XP administrator account would be very useful.<br /> <ol> <li>Try to leave the password blank. Simply press Enter without typing anything.</li></ol> <p>The default Windows XP Administrator password is defined to blank during the initial Windows XP installation process.<br /> <ol> <li> Enter the password for your account. It often depend on how Windows XP has been installed on your computer and what part of XP is asking for an admin password, the main user account will also be configured with administrator privilege.</li></ol> <p><br /> I Forgot my Windows XP Administrator Password!</b><br /> <p><br /> Windows XP User Accounts applet in the Control Panel functions is to create a password reset disk wizard. Using this wizard, a floppy disk or USB flash drive can be used to create a specific password reset disk for specific user account on a specific Windows XP computer. The password reset disk can only be used with the computer it was created on and it can also be reused to reset the account's password multiple times. However, you need to know the password of the account you want to create the reset disk for, and you must create the reset disk before you forget the administrator password <br /> Here is how to <a href="http://recoverlostpassword.com/products/windowspasswordrecoery.html">reset XP administrator password</a> with the XP password reset disk:<br /> <ol> <li>Insert the XP password reset disk to the computer</li> <li>Click the Use your password reset disk item on the XP logon screen to start the Password Reset Wizard. Click the Next button</li> <li>Follow the instructions to create a new password. </li> <li>Logon with the new password.</li></ol> <p><br /> I Didn't Create a Password Reset Disk!</b><br /> <p><br /> OK, if you <a href="http://recoverlostpassword.com/products/windowspasswordrecoery.html">forgot Windows XP administrator password</a> and don't have a password rest disk, you won't be able to create a password reset disk anymore. Instead, there are several things you can try to get access to your windows. <b>SmartKey Windows Password Recovery</b> is your ticket. This password recovery tool not only works on Windows XP, but also on all releases of Windows NT/2000/Vista/ 7 and Windows Server 2003/2008. It works by booting from a CD/DVD or USB flash drive and reset the <a href="http://recoverlostpassword.com/products/windowspasswordrecoery.html">forgotten Windows XP administrator password</a>.<br /> <p><br /> <b>NOTE: </b>If you change the administrator password on a Windows XP or Windows Vista system with the Encrypted File System (EFS), all of the encrypted files will become inaccessible. The password for the Administrator account is used to create the EFS encryption key. Changing the Administrator account back to using the original password should restore access to the encrypted files, but I have never tried it.<br /> <p> <br /> <p>If you only need to blank the <b>Windows XP Administrator password</b>, here are the basic steps:<br /> <ol> <li> Download and install SmartKey Windows Password Recovery software.</li> <li> Burn the software to CD/DVD or USB flash drive. </li> <li> Insert newly created CD/DVD and reboot your computer from the CD/DVD or USB flash drive </li> <li> Reset the forgotten Windows XP password, remove the CD/DVD or USB flash drive and then reboot the computer</li></ol> <p>Having the capability to reset <a href="http://recoverlostpassword.com/products/windowspasswordrecoery.html">forgotten XP administrator passwords</a> and regain access to a locked computer can be a great time saver, but should only be tried by an IT professional. you may probably make things worse rather than better if you use sophisticated system or manipulation tools<br /> <p><br /> <p>Article Source:<a href="http://recoverlostpassword.com/article/windows-xp-administrator-password.html">http://recoverlostpassword.com/article/windows-xp-administrator-password.html</a><br />

the system doesn't accepts the lower version of windows if you are having the latest version than xp. for thi you must format the two OS softwares and first install lower version i.e., xp and then by dual booting you can also install vista or windows 7. then you can use both versions..

How do i restore my dell inspiron 1501 to factory settings without the disc? i lost it and im goin nuts...

Contact Dell to purchase a Recovery CD for your model Dell laptop.
The other way is to do a new Windows install. Use a Windows installation CD, it must match the Windows version on the Windows Product Code label on the bottom of your laptop.
You will also need to download the device drivers for your model laptop from the Dell WEB support site, make sure the download the correct XP or Vista version of the drivers that match the Windows version you are installing.

Computer boots up then shows windows 98 scrren

you may face either harddisk failure, a driver problem or virus infection:

tools: original win98-cd (or a bootable image

version of it), antivir-software on cd!

- please check whether it is possible to boot from win98-cd, with cd-rom support, not from harddisk.

(such option should be availabe after bios-load is over)

if not:

leave the setup process without fully installing
(press F3 button when asked for repair or install option)

in both cases :

type at the dos-prompt:

c:\win98/win

(command for changing to harddisk, windows-folder, booting windows from harddisk, but without loading all the drivers as usually)

win98 should come up in protected mode or give error messages.

- access cd-drive and execute vir-scan.
- delete and/or repair infected files
- turn down, attempt to reboot from hd
- if still impossible reboot from win98-cd,
run repair of installation and try once again
standard boot

problem solved? if not, take down error messages consult fixya again!

Back to get the original vista version

Well, with any amount of luck, when you installed xp you didn't erase the recovery partition. Just boot into the recovery partition. Some laptops will let you have that option on a regular boot.

Of course, if you have the vista cd, just boot with that. You can download a free vista recovery cd here:
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/

If that doesn't work, try to download easyBCD and hope that your vista partition shows up in xp:

BLUE SCREEN W/ MESSAGE STOP: C000007B BAD IMAGE.

Try to look for your windows xp cd.
Turn the computer off. Restart it and start tapping f12 right after.
Insert the cd. Choose the option that says CD/CDRW/DVDRW from the screen and press enter. Watch out for a prompt that will say 'Press any key to boot from cd'. press any key as soon as you get this. If you miss it, you'll get the error again. You should get the blue windows setup screen if you caught it at the right time.
Wait until you get the 'welcome to setup' screen.
Press R.
Follow any other instructions that you may get until it gives you the C:\> prompt.
Type in bootcfg /rebuild.

Below is a listing of the common steps you are likely going to encounter.

* Prompt for the identified versions of Windows installed. When you receive this prompt press Y if the bootcfg command properly identified each of the Windows operating systems installed on the computer. It is important to realize this command will only detect Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT installations.

* Prompt to enter the load identifier. This is the name of the operating system for the boot.ini. For example, Microsoft Windows XP Home users would enter "Microsoft Windows XP Home edition". If you have Windowx XP pro edition, enter 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional'

* Prompt to Enter OS load options. When this prompt is received type /fastdetect to automatically detect the available options.
Then type 'exit'. and let the computer reboot. If you get two options for microsoft windows. Choose the one that says what you entered when you were in the recovery console.

If you are able to boot correctly after those steps, go to start>click run. Then type msconfig. Click ok. Click the boot.ini tab. Click 'check all boot paths'. Click ok or yes. click close and restart if prompted. You shouldn't get the prompt for two microsoft windows anymore.
