You need a receiver or add in "converter box" as you call it. The TV is fully capable of displaying HD content, it just does not have a built in cable signal converter. You need something that will convert your signals to an HD picture, the TV is basically just a monitor. That's like trying to use a monitor for a computer without the computer... you need something that "computes" the signal that is sent to the TV. For example a Playstation 3, DVD player, and cable box have their own built in "computers" that process the signal and send it to your TV. You will need some kind of converter attached, do you see what I'm saying? Your best bet is to just get cable TV that is HD and it will have a port on the cable box for where to attach your HD antenna.

Thanks
Tim

How to get analog channels on my Toshiba?

The problem is probably that your antenna can't pick up any of the remaining analog stations in your area. Only low-power stations are still broadcasting an analog signal. If you are using an indoor antenna, you might the signal with an outside antenna with an amplifier. (Check a site like tvfool.com to get the direction to any nearby analog station and make sure that your antenna is oriented correctly. This site or antennaweb.org will also help you orient your antenna for the digital stations in your area.)

You need a set-top digital tuner or a converter box to translate the OTA digital signals (ATSC) and translate them to the analog NTSC format. Low end converter models with only SD output are harder to find but still available. However, there are some converter boxes that have HD output as well. This one, http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?mc=03&p=3500STB&d=iView-HD-DVR-ReceiverConverter-Box-for-TV-Antenna-QAM-(3500STB)&c=Digital%20Converter%20Boxes&sku= , lets you attach an external drive (USB flash drive or hard drive) . It connects via component video or HDMI. (We've had good luck with our model with a portable (2.5") external hard drive. It replaces the SD converter box and DVD recorder.)

I hope this helps.

(In my area, there is only one low-power station still broadcasting. Its transmitter is nearly 40 miles and can only be picked up with the external antenna and amplifier. If the weather is bad, we will lose that signal. Beware: an amplifier can become damaged and block the signal. The usual check for this removing the amplifier and attaching the antenna directly to the TV. For low-power stations, this test doesn't often help.)

I have an older Sharp Aquos TV - model # LC-32G4U. I am trying to connect a digital antenna but it doesn't work. Anyone know if I need a separate digital tuner for this TV? Or what else might be t

There is no difference between a "digital" and analog antenna. Either antenna will capture the signal. What you need is a digital converter box to convert the over air digital signal to the older analog type signal your TV needs. You connect the antenna to the digital converter box, and the digital converter box to the TV.
Several years ago, the US government forced peopel to buy digital converter boxes or newer TVs that could pick up the digital signal. Either get a digital converter box or a new TV.

How do I get the free digital channels on my tv?

One way you can get free high quality digital channels is an HD antenna. In recent years, the government stopped broadcasting analog (non-HD) signals, and instead pumped out HD. They advertised their "converter box", that made it possible for people receiving their TV channels from antenna, to get HD.
If you currently have an antenna that you prefer to use, you can buy a converter box here.
But, the solution that in the end will get you more channels is a new HD antenna. They range from extremely powerful roof antenna's, to average tabletop antenna's. A roof antenna has more distance, but can be more hard to set up compared to the tabletop ones.
You can buy a variety of tabletop ones Here
Or, you can choose outdoor Here
You can learn to set it up Here
If your TV doesn't have HD capabilities ("HDTV") than you will need a converter box, which can buy at the link above ( or here.).
Hope this helped!

You do need a converter box with that model. It does not have the HD tuner in it.

HD ready?

It was not a problem. It is just a question. Is it HD ready or not without a converter box or cable?
I will go to a store and ask a tech if you can not answer.
thanks

Insignia digital tv converter/indoor antenna no signal

Ok first I can save you some money. Take your "HDTV" antenna back. There is nothing different about the antennas needed receive analog and digital signals. If you got reception without your converter box, use the same antenna with your converter box.

Next let's see if there is a problem with the box. Hook up a television with the antenna. How many stations do you get? Now hook up the same television & antenna, but this time put the converter box between the antenna & the TV. Do not turn on the box. Now how many stations do you get? If the number is different, the box is not allowing the antenna signal to pass through. That is bad. You want your signal to pass through the box so you can still pick up stations that don't broadcast digitally. Some areas of the country will not be covered by digital stations from all major broadcasters when the changeover happens in Feb.

My suspicion is either you did not have the antenna hooked up to the converter box when you searched for channels OR you are in an area that is not yet broadcasting digitally.

I hope this helps you solve your problem. Thank you for using FixYa and feel free to add more questions here by using comments.

DTV converter box

Buy a hdtv antenna to autoscan program channels which should bring in a lot more then reconnect with the older antenna afterwards and if you're still not getting all the channels then each source needs a strong hdtv antenna that can be adjusted manually.

Hdtv converter box to vcr

Hi Drtrippy,

If I understand correctly, you are using your VCR for the actual tuning of the TV.

The converter box itself contains a tuner, so you should now receive extra channels available only to an HD tuner. You should try connecting your antenna as input to the converter box. Then output the signal from your converter box to the VCR. Your VCR may then remain connected to your projector.

You may simply think of this as if you are inserting the converter box between your antenna and your VCR, which should be currently connected to receive an over-the-air signal. Remember, as the tuner you will be using is in the converter box, you will need to change channels using the converter box, not the VCR.

Thank you,
Jason,
