If you mean it won't stay running after the unit actually starts...meaning as soon as you release the red button it shuts off then you would need to clean the end of the thermocouple that screws into the gas valve....not the end that goes into the flame.
Remove the small nut and clean the end with a small wire brush or scrape some metal off with a knife, then scrape some metal inside the valve where the end of the thermocouple seats.

But if you mean it will not start at all then you need to make sure gas in getting through the valve.

SOURCE: ignition button won't click down

Had the same problem. The HSI relay (SIEMANS T7CS50-24) on the circuit board went bad on mine. That part is hard to find since it's so old so I just got a panel mount 24V relay and soldered the two control wires to the correct locations on the board and everything is peachy. Most people should probably just get a new circuit board though.

When I try to start my mr. Heater I hold the pilot button down and the starter knob won't do anything? I can't get it to light the pilot, I've only had it a month.

Gas is turned on? Pilot button is in pilot position? Push and hold pilot button down, keep holding it down, push igniter many times, while keep holding down pilot button, keep holding until pilot lights. May take several minutes.

Check that gas is turned ON. Gas handle is parallel same direction as gas line.

Make sure that type of gas matches water heater. Natural gas and propane gas are two different types of gas. check label on side of tank for type of gas NG or LP.

My heater has a tapping when you turn on the ignition switch from lower passenger side. it doesns change with the fan speed but stops for a moment when the fresh/recirculation button is pushed

Try to replace the relay for the recirulation/fresh blower. I have a 1991 Chev PU and the relays are behind and below the glovebox compartment.

Re Williams 3003622 Heater Please advise how to ignite pilot light.

You will first need to turn the control knob to pilot. Then depress the control knob button and hold it. Then press the push button piezo igniter several times until pilot lights or open pilot inspection cover and manually light pilot with match/lighter. You may need to hold the control knob for at least a minute. Then release the control knob and if the pilot stays lit then turn the control knob to on. If it does not light then repeat the process again.
