Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

We switched from ac to heat yerterday, but the furness (RUUD 90 Plus) is not coming on. It sounds like it is about to come on, but is just making a low humming sound like it is getting ready to come on. The AC works just fine.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

I am installing an Emerson programmable thermostat. We have a Ruud furnace achiever 90 plus that was installed 14 years ago. The thermostat mentions a power stealing switch.

The Ruud furnace is probably compatible. Power stealing is a way to recharge the thermostat battery from the 24vac control voltage used to operate the furnace. If you install the Thermostat in the "separate power supply mode" it does not need to power steal ever and will be much more reliable. Some thermostats don't get enough power in the power steal mode to keep the battery reliably recharged, especially during the cold winter months because the poiwer available to "power steal" is highest when the furnace is NOT running. You will need a separate 24 vac transformer and some wire.

I have a RUUD deluxe 90 plus that has always worked just fine. The only new part of the equation is that early this spring I installed a new Hunter 44660 thermostat. I have had no issues with the AC

If the furnace fires but the fan does not come on after the heat-exchanger has had time to heat up (a few minutes) then your brother is probably correct. If not, however, you could be correct in your wiring assumption. The red wire going to your thermostat provides 24 volts to various control circuits. The white wire to the thermostat should power the gas valve control circuit. You could jump these two together and if the furnace fires and the fan comes on after a few minutes, then you will need to rewire or possibly replace your thermostat.

Neither of my Ruud Achiever Plus furnances are

First, put the t'stat fan switch into "Fan" position. If fan comes on, it verifys that you have voltage to the motor and you also have low voltage for the controls.
Look for the circuit board on the air handler as in most of the higher end units, they have tights that flash the gives you a trouble code. Table for the codes us usually located on the back side of the cover where the board is located.
Hope this helps.

Ruud achiever 90 plus gas furnace not turning on

Remove and clean the drain trap and make sure the drain tubes are clear.
It sounds like the water may be building up in your drain lines.
Hope this helps.

does the furnace ignite?? your system may not have been lighting and has gone into ignition lockout count the codes of the led lights then remove panel led diagnostic codes are listed there.
if led codes indicate no problem verify capacitor is good and that mtr is getting 115 volts.

The door, you mean the metal cover on the front? if you have the door off and push the safety switch in with your hand everything works fine? I need more info here, but if what I said is right, then the "door" isn't making good contact with the switch.
