Question about Projection Televisions

3 Answers

I have an old Phillips Magnavox television. I turned it off and, as usual, the screen took a while to completely stop glowing (vaguely white glow). As it was almost black, suddenly there was a flare of light in a circle-like shape that grew and then faded away. This bright light was like looking at thick vertical bars of primary colors through a cut out circle and was as bright as colors would ne if the tv was on. Does anyone know what this is? Is this a fire hazard?

Techman(solution #2) is correct on your problem. #1There had better be no air in a crt.that statement should be discarded by all means. If you drop down your contrast level the phosferous in the crt will not glow as warm thus reducing after-glow. Hope this answers your question.

And to top that off, that means your CRT in your TV is better than average. It means that the CRT has less air in it than most causing the slow discharging of high voltage. RCA and most companies call this "afterglow" and in some cases the CRT will also do a "preglow" when you first power it up.

No that is a normal situation, as it is the high voltage bleeding out of the picture tube. You will normally only see this happen in a darkened room. I would not worry about it.

Inside of your TV their is a fluid that keeps the tubes cool. Over the years this fluid will turn cloudy and cuase the screen to look dull, bright white, have halos, etc. You can get the fluid over the internet from various sources or your can get a complete kit including repair instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com.

"Halo" Effect

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Your CRT fluid needs to be replaced. After many years the crt cooling fluid gets a ton of alage built up in the tubes.  This will cause the screen to get a halo effect or get darker.

You only need to replace the fluid in the blue and green tubes.

It's probably the magnets on the neck of each CRT that moved since you removed them or the CRTs weren't put back in the exact orientation . Use a white paint pen to mark each one as they are now. If there's a clamp or two metal rings that locks them in place you can try rotating them as a group (their location up and down the neck is also critical).  If not you will have to adjust them individually and then do a complete convergence adjustment. That's a big task. Good luck.

Convergence issues...green glow around objects on the screen

a green glow sounds more like a coolant issue more than convergence. Is your TV a phillips or magnavox by any chance? Please reply to this same post and let me know your model number.
