Take the carburator apart and clean it. Also, clean needle and seat. Please let me know if this helps.

SOURCE: white smoke and oil spewing out of troy built

Check your oil level. If it is way over full, smell it to see if it smells like gasoline. If it does, you have a carburetor leaking gas into the engine crankcase. If you recently had the mower over on its side for blade changing or inspection, you have gotten oil up on top of the piston and it should burn off in a few minutes of running. Check your air filter to see if it is soaked with oil, replace it if it is.

You may want to check valve clearance, sounds borderline. You should have 11/1000s on the exhaust valve. The exhaust is usually the culprit, since it runs hotter.

The following website has a lot of information about Toros:

You've done most of the things, except you didn't mention ceaning the air filter, but perhaps you incuded that cleaning the carb. You could have a cracked gas hose,
This page might be of help to you also:

Where is primer on craftsman platinum push mower

It may not have one. Some mowers auto choke using spring tension on the choke plate in the carb. They open the choke when the engine speeds up after starting.

Where is the choke

Many Briggs engine have a primer rather than a choke, the 675 series has a choke that is worked by an air vain, the choke is always closed when the engine is stopped, once the engine starts air pressure from the flywheel pushes the air vain which in turn opens the choke to allow the engine to run normally, there is also a version with a bi thermal switch on the back of the muffler, as the muffler heats up the switch opens the choke.

Engine starts sputters then shuts off

probably a dirty carb. or if this problem is occuring when the engine has been run and is hot and its the new style easy start engine with auto choke ( no primer or choke lever) then the auto choke unit coud be faulty

My Briggs & Stratton Quantum 65 starts perfectly from cold but refuses to re-start when hot. Any ideas?

Do a compression check when cold, then again when hot. Sounds like when its hot your losing compression. If this is the case, it won't want to start when hot. Compression should be above 60 lbs. Thats where i would start. I hope this is of some help to you.
