When someone calls on the phone nuimber (7240794-5491) the phone rings in the normal way. When you answer the phone you can hear the fax trying to dial in the background.

The phone company told me the fax machine has to be programed to anser only when the fax

    number (724-406-0179) has been called.

  • mcg_mgt Oct 06, 2010

Talked to phone co again. They said that when a fax machine is on the same line as a phone
with each having their own numbers that the fax has to be programed to answer on a distinctive They also said they do NOT believe a 9000L can be programed to do so.

  • mcg_mgt Oct 06, 2010

If the phone co had told me the fax had to be programed this problem would not have happened. All they said was just plug the fax into the modem and it will work. Finally, this morning I was told about the programing and the 9000L could not be. This has been going on since Monday of last week. Thanks for your input. Bob McGowan

Woah, run that one by me again? Is this a Canon LaserClass 9000L? It needs to be programmed to receive only it's number? What do you mean by that? What else is it receiving currently? There is no way for it to discern a phone call, but it can definitely be set to answer after 2 rings.
Thanks, please give me some more info here and I can help Tim

Ok yes, it is a distinctive ring function and your machine can't do that. The easiest way to solve this by far is to just get a separate phone line that is the fax and plug that into the machine. Then use that number ONLY for faxes, do not put any voice handsets on it at all... Then you don't have to worry about them crossing lines...

    Thanks

Why can't I answer a call on line 2?

Confirm the extension # you are working with and that the line 2 key is line 2. do this by pressing feature *0 and the pressing the intercom key, observe the display and then press line 2 key and view display. then go back in the programming and view line 2 apear&ring, change it until it is apear&ring, then release and check for working again. If this dont work check to see if line 2 is programmed as a private line.

IT WILL RING BUT GOES TO ANSWERING MACHINE DOES NOT RECEIVE FAX

>first run fax test, press set up go to tools menu then select run fax test, all entries should be pass
>then check your connections, do you have one line or number for your fax and phone?or a separate line or another number for fax and another number for phone?
>let me assume you only have one number for fax and phone..
>check connections, this should be downstream connection, the fax machine using the black phone cord provided by hp should be connected directly to the phone jack using line 1 at the back of the fax and the answering machine or the telephone should be connected to ext 2 or line 2 at the back of the fax...there should be no other devices phone or answering machine connected directly to the phone jack.
>next set rings to answer on the fax machine higher than the answering machine...if your rings to answer on answering machine is 4 rings, set the fax to 6 rings...if it is a voice call the answering machine will pick it up at 4 rings then if it detects that it it a fax tone then it will transfer the call to fax.
>also check if auto answer is on in your fax
>you can check auto answer and rings to answer by pressing set up or menu button on your machine look for it in basic fax settings or advance settings
>also check if your voice prompt for your answering machine is not too short there should be like at least 5 seconds after cutting your message to allow the machine to transfer the call to the fax if it is a fax tone.

Stations don't ring even though day ring and night ring enabled.

Sounds like the ring assignmet programming has defaulted.( all lines ring at station 4 only)
To change the ringing on a prostar 816 you first need to be at a display set (doesn't matter what the extension number is).
with the handset down enter #20 the screen should say MMC DISABLED
1) enter in 1 2 3 4 1 # (that enables programming)
2) enter in #62 the screen should say day ring assn
3) press the line you wish to program
4) press the buttons for the extensions that you wish to ring (the ones in the right next to the handset)
5) press # when finished with the line
repeat for each line

I need to retrieve my home phone messages from cell phone

Activating Call Forwarding

You can activate Call Forwarding whenever you want your calls to be sent to another phone, including a mobile phone. Once activated, all your calls will be sent to the forwarding number you request. Each time a call is forwarded, you will hear one short reminder tone on your home phone, but you will not be able to answer the call from your home number.

1. Lift your telephone's receiver and listen for a dial tone.

2. Press *7 2.
In some areas you must use 72#
Dial 1172 on rotary or pulse-dialing phones.

3. At the tone, dial the telephone number where you want your calls transferred.
You will hear the number you entered ring. When the number is answered, Call Forwarding is activated.

4. If the call is not answered or the line is busy, hang up and call the number again within two minutes.
You will hear two short tones telling you that Call Forwarding is activated.

5. Hang up the receiver.

Deactivating Call Forwarding

Turn Call Forwarding off when you want to receive calls on your home phone.

1. Lift your telephone's receiver and listen for a dial tone.

2. Press * 73.
In some areas you must use 73#
Dial 1173 on rotary or pulse-dialing phones.

3. Listen for two short tones.
Call Forwarding is now off and you will receive your calls at your home number.

Have to be near fax machine to recieve fax

The Rings to Answer feature might not be set to answer after the
appropriate number of rings for your office setup.
If you have a voice mail service at the same phone number you use
for fax calls, you must receive faxes manually, not automatically. For
information on how to receive faxes manually, see receive a fax
manually from a phone
on page 48.
If you have a PC modem on the same phone line with your
HP Officejet, check to make sure that the modem’s software is not
set to receive faxes automatically. Modems with this auto fax
receive feature turned on will take over the phone line to receive all
incoming faxes, which will prevent the HP Officejet from receiving
fax calls.
If you have an answering machine on the same phone line with
your HP Officejet, you might have one of the following problems:
Your outgoing message might be too long or too loud to allow
the HP Officejet to detect fax tones, and the calling fax machine
might disconnect.
Your answering machine might not have enough quiet time after
your outgoing message to allow the HP Officejet to detect fax
tones. This problem is more common with digital answering
machines.
The following actions might help solve these problems:
a. Disconnect the answering machine and then try receiving a fax.
If faxing is successful without it, the answering machine might
be causing the problem.
b. Reconnect the answering machine and re-record your outgoing
message. Make sure the message is as short as possible (no
more than 10 seconds long), and that you speak softly and
slowly when recording it. Try again to receive a fax.
If you have a special ring pattern for your fax phone number (using
a distinctive ring service through your telephone company), make
sure that the Answer Ring Pattern feature on your HP Officejet is set
to match. For example, if the phone company has assigned your
fax number a double ring pattern, make sure Double Rings is
selected as the Answer Ring Pattern setting. For information on
changing this setting, see change the answer ring pattern
(distinctive ringing)
on page 63.
Note that some ring patterns cannot be recognized by the
HP Officejet, such as those with alternating short and long ringing
patterns. If you are having problems with a ring pattern of this type,
ask your phone company to assign a non-alternating ring pattern.
