Question about Samsung DVD & Blu-Ray Players

3 Answers

WE HAVE YOUR DVD-4600. MOST OF THE TIME THINGS WORK NORMALLY. WHEN WE RECORD A PARTICULAR PROGRAM ( IT HAPPENS TO BE NCIS) WE GET THE VOICE-OVER THAT DESCRIBES ONSCREEN ACTION FOR PERSONS WHO ARE UNABLE TO SEE THE SET. THE LETTERS "SAP" APPEAR BRIEFLY ON THE SCREEN, THEN BLINK OFF. WE CAN FIND NO REFERENCE TO THIS FUNCTION IN THE MANUAL. ALSO, ONLY ON A PARTICULAR PROGRAM (THIS ONE IS "DANCING WITH THE STARS') THE SET DECIDES TO RECORD IN A SPANISH VOICE-OVER. THE SET NORMALLY RECORDS AND PLAYS BACK IN ENGLISH. BOTH OF THESE PROBLEMS HAPPEN WHEN WE RECORD ON VIDEOTAPE.

I called your HELP line and spoke with Rob.  He located the solution and got the problem solved.  Your manual did not cover the reasons for having an audio button on the remote, where the problem was.

I called your help line and spoke to Rob, who found the solution to both problems mentioned.  You manual could have mentioned the SAP and language functions under the audio button on the remote.  That's where the solution was found, although I still would not have known what to do about it.  The audio button shifts from LEFT to RIGHT to MONO to STEREO.  It needs to be set on STEREO, but the manual forgot to tell us that.  Thanks for the HELP line.  Thanks for Rob.

SAP is the "alternate program" that is broadcast by some stations and with some programs for the blind or for different languages as you have seen. Your DVD-4600 is set to receive SAP by default for some reason. There should be a setting to disable it. Or, depending upon how you have set up the recorder, your TV might be set for SAP. Check that as well to disable the SAP setting.

Tried to record on a DVD-R disc, but unit said that the disc was full. I then tried to finalize the disc, but the unit got stuck in the finalization process. I unplugged/replugged the unit to make it...

The most likely reason the unit got 'stuck during finalisation' is probably because there was insufficent space left on the disc for it to write the respective lead-out/menu data (or perhaps there was a bad disc sector) - disc full? Because you unplugged the unit from power point before it had finished, the disc is possibly corrupted now. Throw that disc out.

The manual clearly warns: Do not disconnect the AC power supply cord while finalising. This
can render the disc unusable.

In other words, you have lost that particular recording and you are wasting your time with that disc.

There is nothing in the manual to suggest the length of time required for DVD-R recovery - there is a recovery process for the whole unit (such as after a power cut while recording a timer program for example) but not for discs. I may be wrong here...

However, the upshot is you have lost a disc, not a recorder. Another drink coaster for your living room.

Replaying a time recording program. Why does it replay in Spanish not English

Well, it seems like it is already in English, but the spanish wasn't translated because of malfunctions that who knows what happened, for setting caption should be off unless you want text, voices of blind people sounds like the program on t.v. you recorded.

The DVD AGG (automatic gain control) is somehow being fooled into thinking the non-commercial tape has macrovision (copy protection). Is this a relatively inexpensive machine?

Panasonic DMR E55 Won't record AT&T U-Verse programs!

Make sure you only use the correct type of discs: DVD-RAM or DVD-R for recording and DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Video CD, CD-Audio (CD-DA) and CD-R/RW (MP3, CD-DA, Video CD formatted discs) for playback.

DVD-RAM disks are in plentiful supply on eBay, both new and used. Keep an eye open and you should pick them up, new, for less than £1 Sterling each!

I am unclear, though, what you mean about recording to and from the VCR. The DMR-E55 doesn't have a VCR facility, just DVD.

DVD player won't record full time that is programed into it

There are two things are likely that can cause this: media and copyright protection. If you use DVD-RW or DVD-RAM, you should be able to copy shows ONE time onto the DVD. If you use DVD+RW, or DVD+R, it may issue a copy protection message just before it stops recording.
If the media is bad, it can also cause the machine to stop recording, I believe. You could put it into a PC and try erasing the contents before re-trying to use it in the DVD recorder.

My guess is that your DVD player is malfunctioning. I'd check the warranty and just try and get another. The problem you're describing sounds like the DVD hardware is probably messed up.

Programming errors

Several things to check 1) Your time - set it manually and remove the automatic time set 2) Try manually recording even a few min of anything (just put on channel to record, press DVD button and DVD Record button) - does it give you an error message on that disk? If so it might be because you are using 16x and machine sometimes gets messed up and won't record on those speed disks - same with +R sometimes does this - try recording on 8x -R ones. Hopefully this helps - if not try unplugging unit from wallsocket and leave off about 30min then try setting program again etc (plus current local time) and use a new disk and see if problem still occurs - sometimes just unplugging it "resets" everything and then starts working again.
