My lap top is approx. 4/5 years old, it has two batteries, I tried charging the one that was in it when my daughter-in-law gave it to me, when I unpluged it from the ac after about 24 hours (she had not used this for a year or so) it would not come on after unplugging it from the ac, so I assumed it is a dead battery, the unit came with two batteries, my question is: do I just put the battery in leave it plugged into the ac and turn the machine off and the battery will charge (providing it is good) or is there some other procedure I must do to get it to charge, I haven't tried the second one yet, but wanted to know if there is a button I push or just shut it down with it plugged into ac, thank you

Re: Charging lap top battery
As soon as the AC is plugged in, the battery will start to charge. The battery light located somewhere on the laptop should indicate you that it is charging. It does not matter if the laptop is turned on or off.
What you explain here about the first battery is very common for a 4-5 y.o. laptop. The longevity of the battery mainly depends on the number of charging/discharging cycles it encountered. If the second battery you want to try spent more time in a carrying case than in the laptop, it may still be usable. But do not expect to go over 1 hour of autonomy with it.

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

Hi Lisa, The laptops only four weeks old and you experiencing problems already!!!! The best advice that i can give you is to remove the AC power from the laptop and run the battery completely down to the laptop shuts itself down, then try to charge the battery to 100% charge, if it charges to 100% then all's well and there is nothing to worry about. If it only charges to 95% again then i would recommend that you back up any data that you have on the machine to a flash drive, external drive or CD/DVD and take advantage of the manufacturers warranty and send it in for HP to deal with, it will cost you nothing as its covered for at least a year.
switch off - disconnect ac adaptor - wait 3 seconds - connect ac adaptor - repeat about 20 times.
Is charge light blinking when you connect ac adaptor?
Try reseating battery.
If battery is old (over 2 years) or heavily used then it may need replacing. They only last for 250-500 complete discharges.
your lap top probbubly has a power saving seting for your usb ports ..try changing that or pluging into a regular desktop computer... it will turn on when it is charging and show a lightning bolt going through the pickture of the battery...
if that dosent work make use of the warenty (if it is still useable)
