A black rectangle appears in the bottom half of the screen. The rest of the picture is fine, the sound is fine. The box goes away if i press the menu button - but it comes back again. What is wrong?

Do you have a cable/satellite box connected to this tv?

Try this first it sounds like you have the closed caption turned on by accident.
On the remote press the MENU button.
Use the navigation keys to move the selector to CC and press OK.
This should bring up the Closed Caption sub menu.
Ensure that the closed caption is set to OFF

Thanks,
Robert

How to turn closed caption off?

If the cc button on your Sharp remote control isn't turning them off then the captions may be coming from your cable box. The hidden menu to access closed captioning on the cable box is usually found by turning it off and then (yes I did say turn the cable box off) then press the menu button on the front of it immediately after turning it off. Then you navigate down to captions and disable them. When you turn the cable box back on the captions should no longer be there.

Hi dmradil
What you have is CC or close caption.

Black squares or rectangles over picture

It's the closed captioning. The reason it doesn't go away when you press the "caption" button is because there are four option for closed captioning: Text 1, Text 2, Text 3, and Text 4. The fifth option, which has no designation, is the "off" option. Using the remote, just click on the "caption button until the option has no designation.

Mine was a large black rectangle in the middle of the picture. It's not like Nina3's problem.

Polaroid 32" lcd hdtv

Found a solution! Turn off the power on your cable box. Click on menu and scroll down to closed caption. Disable the closed caption and you're good to go! I exchanged my television yesterday because I couldn't get it to work and Polaroid reps couldn't help and this one still had the problem. I got fustrated and finally did a search and found this solution on another forum, I can't take all the credit. Good luck, this is a great t.v. for a great price
