Pool Motors, are painted with a weatherproof paint, but like any paint it will oxidize over time if exposed to the elements. Are you talking about the whole motor case, or just a particular part of the motor? If the motor is only a couple years old, then no it probably should not be rusting. If it is several years old 5, maybe 10, and it has been exposed to the sun and rain, and especially if the motor runs hotter than normal, then it is not uncommon at all that the paint will oxidize and begin to rust. If it is just rusting on the bottom due to water leaking from a shaft seal, or being in constant contact with the wet, or moist ground, then this is bad and needs to be addressed. I hope this answers you question, if not please post a comment, and further explain the age, application, and condition of your motor and I'll be glad to address further. Thanks

My krystal klear model 635t pump won't turn on. just hooked up for the summer and the reset is operating but won't turn on. what can i try?

when a pump motor has been sitting for a long time and will not start ,it indicates that the armature of the motor is seized from a rusted bearing ,normally at the pump end of the motor
you say the reset button works and for that to be in a position to work the motor is not spinning and the overload is putting it out to stop burn out
It may be wise to have it looked at by an accredited pump shop

Why has motot gotten noisey

over time motors get noiseier by wear that occurs in shaft sleeve bearings , this wear is accelerated by water/rust that might get inside , also if pump is new not running a Level base will wear out pump/motor early as well
motor replacemnt is most common way of resoloving this

Is a knob that won't tighten on hayward pump normal wear and tear?

it is possible that the knob was overtightened. check the slipping knob to see if there is a crack in the shaft. the other option is that it is stripped.
either way, it will not be considered normal wear but you should be able to find a replacement knob at your local store

What is the solution for a knob that won't tighten on Hayward Super Pump?

Sounds like it is stripped out. This does happen overtime. You need a new Hand Knob Kit. You can find one here:

Hope this helps.

My barracuda stops moving

There are several steps that you want go through to find the problem with your automatic pool cleaner. Check for air in your system, including hose connections, all fittings at the pump, checking the gasket in pump basket for wear.Make sure that your filter is backwashed and your pump basket is empty. Make sure that your main drain is closed and use your water flow gauge to make sure that you have enough water flow. Finally, check the diaphragm for wear and tear and replace if necessary

The pump only hums when plugged in. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the impellor is locked. Take this part off and then see if the pump is turning but before you do, some of them have a big screw driver slot in the shaft. If it does, turn it to see if you can free the impellor. I have done this many times and they will continue to work for years after. They just get stuck from rust, etc. and also being frozen a little. Hope this helps.

Serpentine belt

if one of the pulleys(power steering is not uncommon) have been removed it is possible it was not pressed back on to the pump shaft far enough. this will cause the wear you explained
