Question about Panasonic DVD & Blu-Ray Players

1 Answer

DMR-EZ48VK - My father is having issues recording DVDs b/c of the copyright protection issue. Is there a "fix" for this? Firmware updates? Workarounds? He's getting messages that he cannot record from just about all of the premium channels (so why have a DVDR anyway?) and what channels he can record from, the picture quality is inferior to the older VHS tapes in his library. Thanks so much for any direction!

By changing the type of recording from extended play to the shorter ones the quality increases just like on a VHS.

Im not sure why he can't record certain channels because Tivo can and you can transfer those to a computer, he might have to call his cable company there.

All dvd-ram, even new, apear to be protected, locked. I can not modify this status from 'disk management menu'. I can not record on them

You cannot record on ANY disc in this unit? Protection on? I have a DMR-EZ48V with the same issue. Protection ON - RW DVDs not recognised. From recent experience, I am advised that it is the DVD-RAM drive, this is not a serviceable part, it must be replaced, and the existing firmware upgraded/reset by an authorised service centre. Only a workshop with the right facilities can restore the record function in these combos, if it indeed CAN be restored. Panasonic are aware of this as a common problem but they cannot explain it. Not economical or cheap via this option - as new DVD drives can cost anywhere around $400+ plus labour!

Is it worth taking to a repair shop to get a FREE quote on likely costs? It's up to you. I don't want to feed you anything here, except what Panasonic Australia have informed me about.

My panasonic dvd recorder was working great and then I had trouble with direct tv and now when I want to record something it gives me a copyright problem? HELP!!!

There is nothing wrong with the player or TV. The programs you are attempting to copy are protected by copyright. Therefore the player will not copy them.

I'm sorry but the TV system is so designed that certain premium and pay-per-view programs carry a signal which instruct the player to not copy them. You should not have any problem copying other free programs.

As mentioned on the Jan12 e-mailed Panasonic - surprise, no response! However on Panasonic's web site drill down to firmware upgrades for DVD machines. There is an upgrade available for the E50P. Straight forward fix, download to computer, expand it and copy to a CD-R. Put CD-R into E50 and recorder will check and update firmware. I did this on the 13th and have recorded two commercial free movies and both have played back perfectly after finalization. Time will tell. Hope this helps. Golferdon
