WRT54G Router Hookup

I just want to use the router as a wireless access for my laptop. I have Charter Broadband modem which I can connect from the modem to the router with a data cable...but is there anything else I need to do?? I don't have another computer to hook to ports 1-4 on the back of the router, again just using it (router) as wireless access point for my laptop.

All you need to do is connect the modem to the router. From the router, you will want a computer connected to it so you can configure your wireless network.

Change the wireless network name and then change the key.
Try to connect to the new wireless network and see if that works.
If not then you can try to upgrade the firmware of your Linksys router.
After upgrading the firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it.

I'm trying to hookup a usb modem broadband to a router for a desktop and laptop

This wireless router does not have any USB connection on it. Types of connection available on this router are wireless and Ethernet. You can check on the modem if there is an Ethernet port on it.

If your modem has an Ethernet port, I recommend that you test the Ethernet connection using one of your computers. We want to make sure that the Ethernet connection on the modem is enabled. If not, you may need to contact your ISP or the modem manufacturer to make sure that the Ethernet will work before you install the router.

If your modem does not have have an Ethernet port on it. This is not the router that will do the work for you. And I personally does not seen any router yet with the USB port for the modem.

Need to redo wireless setup betw linksys & westell

You will need to assign a different ip address to the Westell modem - I am assuming that both the router & modem are using the same ip address 192.168.1.1? If that is the case, then assign 192.168.1.2 to the modem.

Connectivity

Hi Joe,

That just depends on how you want to connect with your laptop.
If you need wireless access, then you have to use the WRT54G, because the RT31P2 has no wireless capabilities.
If you are connected via ethernet cable, then you can simply take the WRT54G out.

If you like to read up on different scenarios, here is my favorite page.

Enjoy!

Wireless router says its working laptop says no its not

Your sister was accessing the wireless access point at school which is connected to the Internet/WEB access via a router and the school's broadband service provider.
For you to access the Internet using your wireless adapter on your laptop, you need your own wireless access point and connect it to a broadband ADSL or cable modem and then connect it to an Internet Service Provider. Some Internet Service Providers (cable and ADSL) can supply a combined modem/router/wireless Access point.
If you already have a broadband modem all you need is a wireless access point/router. You only need to configure the wireless access point and your wireless adapter so they will communicate with each other. Folow the instructions in the manuals.

Setting Up a Wireless Network

You can still use your existing Linksys router with your cable modem. In fact the router your have is designed to work with DSL/Cable Broadband connections.

1. Make sure to properly connec the devices in your network. Modem will be connected to the Internet port of the router. Then, laptop will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router. For initial setup of your router with modem, you need to hardwire laptop to the router.
2. Press and hold reset at the back of the router for about 15 seconds.
3. After 15 seconds turn off the router and then turn off the modem. Wait for a minute.
4. Power on modem and wait for the lights to be ready.
5. When modem lights are on, turn on router.
6. There should be 4 lights on. Power should be steady green. Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port.
7. Checked if you have Internet connectivity on your laptop while it is wired to the router.
8. If Internet is working, disconnect laptop from wired connection to the router and check available wireless network that laptop can detect.
9. The default wireless network name that the Linksys router broadcasts is "linksys". Connect to it which is an unsecured wireless network.
10. Once you are successfully connected, check Internet.

Hope this helps!

You can get a regular wireless G broadband router (WRT54G) But you must also check if your sprint modem has an ethernet port so that you will be able to connect the router to it.

Laptop

Hi,

It really depends on what "modem" Orange provided you with and how your personal PC is connected to the modem.

If the "modem" provided by Orange uses WiFi (such as Livebox) networking, then it is a matter of setting up your daighter's laptop to access and use the Livebox WiFi Network. In this case no router is needed since your modem is also a router.

If your PC is connected via Ethernet port to the "modem" and Orange's "modem" is a single Ethernet output port, you would need an AP/Router (Wireless since I am presuming the your daughter's laptop would be accessing the Internet wirelessly) such as the LinkSys WRT54G.

If your PC is connected via USB port to the "modem" and Orange's "modem" has only a USB output port (no Ethernet), you need to make your PC as the default gateway/software router and share your PC's Internet connection. If you are connecting your daughter's laptop using Ethernet cable, then you don't need a WiFi AP/Router but an ordinary hub. If on the other hand the new laptop would connect wirelessly, you would still need something like the WRT54G.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post again how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
