first check to make sure all the burner tops are setting correctly on the burner base, if not it will make the flame uneven. the way the igniter works is once they feel the flames on them they will stop sparking. make sure the flames are not too low and they are touching the igniter. check them one at a time. if you have any questions message me back thanks

Large burner elements ignite, and igniter spark fails to stop, then the burner shuts off as if ignition failed. Tiny central burner element does NOT light at any time. Apparently the safety cutoff...


There is a thermistor that must be in the flame area that needs to get hot. When hot it will turn the igniter off and keep the flame on. Check it's location and if it is in the flame then it needs to be replaced. not sure about the central flame problem. could be the switch.

Have a large mobile propane grill with burner problems


Ok, here is a check list for your most common gas grill lighting problems:

1) Check your tank. Is it empty or nearly empty? The tare weight (T.W.) of your cylinder is stamped on the collar. This is the weight of your empty cylinder, usually around 18 lbs. Weigh it on your bathroom scale2_bing.gif. Propane weighs 4.25 lbs/gal. If it weighs around 20 lbs or less - Refill it. If not, go to #2.

2) Make sure you didn't turn the gas tank valve on too fast. Some gas hoses have a built-in excess flow valve that stops the flow of gas to a trickle if opened too fast. Close the tank valve and let sit for a few minutes. Or just disconnect it and reconnect it. Turn the tank valve very slowly and then try lighting it again. If it doesn't help, go to #3.

3) Is the igniter sparking? Some are battery2_bing.gif powered-check the battery or replace it. If you have a standard push button piezzo igniter or a rotary style2_bing.gif igniter, check for spark. Can you hear or see the spark? It's hard to see the spark in bright daylight. It's easier to view the spark at dusk or dawn. It should spark an "arc" at the burner. If not, adjust it if necessary. The igniter wire may have a short, causing the spark to arc somewhere else along the wire and not at the burner. Replace igniter wire. It's also possible the igniter tip where it sparks has a cracked or broken porcelain portion of the igniter, causing the spark to not arc at the tip where it's supposed to. Replace the igniter piece. If not, go to #4.

4) You may have a rusted, clogged or damaged burner or venturi tube. With a flashlight, check for spider webs, wasp nests or dirt (mud) dauber nests in the opening of the venturi tube where it connects at each gas valve orifice. Clean it out manually or blow it out with air compressor. Make sure the air adjustment opening (on the end of the burner's venturi tube) has not been changed. If it's closed too much, it will be difficult to light and cause lazy yellow flames. If it's not clogged, the burner may just be old and rusted and the burner holes are not allowing very much gas through anymore. It's also possible the burner has rusted so bad, the burner holes have been enlarged, it is falling apart or has cracks along the burner seams. If so, replace the burner(s) immediately. It is unsafe to use. Your local propane co can usually order the parts you need and some will even do the work, if you are uncomfortable doing it yourself. Bring with you the Make, Model and Serial number of the grill, so they can order the correct parts for your specific grill. Also specify whether it's natural gas2_bing.gif or propane.

5) If none of these resolve the issues you are having, it is also possible you have a faulty or defective regulator, which may mean replacement. If the pressure still seems too low and none of the above has helped, and you have a silver/gray regulator; many have an adjustment screw on the top center of the diaphragm. Remove the outer cap and turn the inside screw clockwise in 1/4 turns to increase the pressure until the desired flame size is accomplished. Flames should be as blue as possible, but will burn orange if there is food or drippings on it. Yellow flames are not good, and will soot up everything and not cook as hot as blue flames do. Yellow flames could mean you do not have the right air shutter adjustment, clogged burners, or possibly defective burners, as mentioned above in #4.

6) Also make sure you have the hose connection tightened snugly to the propane tank valve to ensure the inner valve seat is fully depressed allowing gas to exit fully without any restriction. The black plastic female fitting should be hand tightened only. Older versions that use a left-hand male brass POL valve, requires a 7/8 open end wrench or adjustable wrench to tighten.

The oval burner has only very low flame, even when set on high


Every one of these ranges that I have seen with the oval style burner on them have a smaller flame then the normal round burners. And there is very little difference between the low and high settings. It sounds like what you are experiencing is normal. What the GE repairman was adjusting is called the "simmer stop". There is a small flat head screw inside the burner stem. By turning this screw you can adjust the size of the burner on the low position of the burner knob. This should be adjusted to where the burner still stays on when the knob is at the lowest setting. I do not think that you need the burner repaired. From my experience they are all like that.

Hi!
First of all does this unit uses a hot surface ignitor or a spark ignitor? A hot surface ignitor is a resistive element that will get hot enough(glows yellow to near white) that ignites the main burners directly and a spark ignitor will light a pilot light first then that pilot light will ignite the main burners.
If your system uses the hot surface ignitor then there will be a flame sensor on the last burner that lights. This is a thin silver metal probe that is actually in the burner flame when that burner is lit. It is held in place normally by a 1/4 inch screw. It will have 1 wire attached to the end by a female spade connector. You can pull this wire off before you remove the flame sensor to clean it. Use a fine emery cloth to lightly sand off any residue on it. Also you will need to clean the end of that burner that the flame sensor serves as this is normally the grounding field. This is most likely the problem with your system if it is a hot surface ignition type.
If your system is the spark type then the problem is similar. Normally the pilot light is toughing a small flame sensing probe that is next to the pilot light. This probe also has to be clean. One more thing to look at is to see if the pilot light is large enough to surround the flame sensor. If the pilot is weak it will not touch the flame sensor enough and the system will do what it is doing for you now. If the pilot is weak then the pilot orfice is restricted. This should only be looked at and repaired by a qualified service technician. I hope I pointed you in the right direction!! Good luck!!

Vulcan Ilec central heater main burners turn off after few second


Flame rollout sensors, overheat thermistor, air proving switch, bad earthing, blocked flue. Any of these things can cause your problem. If its a permanent pilot, is it clean burning?? If electronic ignition, is the flame rod clean i.e. no carbon or rust etc.. Safest bet is a qualified gasfitter take a look at it.

How old is the grill? The size of the holes in the burner is critical. As burners age, the holes rot out, and get bigger. The velocity of the gas exiting the holes has a large effect on flame size. New burner is the most typical solution.

When the large burner is on, it keeps trying to ignite


Check that the burner orifice nozzle (the round thing that comes off) is properly seated on the burner manifold. Mine have a tab that must interlock.

Make sure all your burner orifices are CLEAN. Scrub them with a plastic kitchen scrubber, soap and water.

The way this works is, when a burner is turned on, the sensing mechanism for the spark control reads the ionization of the flame. No flame, no ionization, keep sparking so gas buildup is minimal in the area before a flame is ignited. )Kinda like the spark thingy's underneath the shuttle, without the ionization sensor's, just before it launches.).

Rheem gas furnace pilot lights, but no burners or fan


If the burners do not fully ignite, the sensor will shut the furnace down. The lack of sufficient burner flame is a gas valve or gas pressure problem within the valve.
Replacing the gas valve with the original one may get you going. I surely suggest a professional service company for safety reasons and a thorough inspection. A 20 year old furnace is past it's normal life span.
