Question about Computers & Internet

Have a Vostro 200 that shuts down by itself overnight. Will only 'click' repeatedly when start button is pressed. If unplugged for 10 or 15 minutes, can restart and run fine. May run several days before shutting down by itself again. Is there a circuit breaker failing? If so, where? Thanks

This is a Desktop MIni tower computer.

I don' t believe the power settings are in question. The machine physically turns off, dies, quits, etc. on its own. When trying to restart, nothing happens. If start button is held down (i.e. like a forced shutdown), the machine issues a intermittent click, click, click. Have tried to unplug power, dump capacitors, replug power, and still no start. ONLY after allowing machine to sit unplugged for several minutes does it respond. This may only happen once every week or two, but may indicate a power supply failure or some other power circuit failure. This machine is in a work environment and is normally started on Monday and shut down on Friday. During the week it goes into hibernation after 60 minutes and normally becomes active with a mouse nudge of key stroke.
This is the only machine in about 20 that does this.

It goes to sleep about 5:30 p.m. It was again off this morning, and after unplugging for 10 min. and replugged started right up. Checked all vents and fans are all running. It does sound like a heat problem, but not sure if in power supply or breaker circuit outside of power supply.

It is a heat problem it sounds like. Does it run for days continuously without going to sleep or getting turned off at all?

Let me know and I can definitely fix this for you

Have you physically looked inside the machine to inspect for dead or slowing fans? If there does not appear to be any fan having an issue it is almost certainly the power supply. I'd suggest you get a new power supply from some place that will let you return it if it ends up not being the culprit. For example Best Buy is very good at taking returns...

    Thanks

Actually I'm sorry you said it's a mini tower.... hmm that makes it harder. It probably is still the power supply, definitely not a circuit outside of it. It could also be the motherboard though. Power supplies for these little mini buggers are hard to come by sometimes...

Looking for one for you now

The possible cause could be a power adapter failure or the board where the power is plugged in at went bad. Worst case, a motherboard failure.

Test the power adapter. Make sure the adapter outputs correct voltage. It's possible that the output voltage is not correct and the laptop shuts down to prevent the damage. Test your laptop with another known good power adapter.

I am very sorry for my first diagnostics. May i ask if you checked the power management settings under the control panel if you have the correct settings? You can set the power management tool to your desired time when the computer will shutdown. If you set the power management to the desired time and the computer wont react to the set time. Then, there could be something wrong with the operating system. Normal procedure is, if your set the computer to turn of after an hour then the computer should turn off to the set time. Could you test that one please?

Long time shut down problem of laptop dell vostro 1015 with core 2duo

What is the exact problem.

A Does it turn off automatically after few minutes Or

B It fails to shut down when you choose to do so ??

If the system turn off automatically, try to clean the cooling vents and make sure that the system is not overheating

If the system fails to shutdown, test the system in safe mode. Restart and tap F8 repeatedly, select safe mode and press Enter. Once it start in safe mode, try to shutdown. If it able to shut down properly then the problem can be with your antivirus software

Tv randomly shuts off

next time it shuts down and power light goes out--do the self check.

On front of set press and hold BOTH MENU AND INPUT BUTTONS FOR AT LEAST FIVE SECONDS AND RELEASE BOTH BUTTONS.

Power light (if an error is detected) will blink a two digit code.

Most common is 2 blinks, pause and 2 blinks---set if there is a error code will repeat it at least 5 times.

If you detect a error code, let me know and I will tell you what it means.

Dell vostro 200 4 repeated beeps on start up

Disconnect all devices from the power supply EXCEPT the motherboard
Remove any extra cards including video etc.(plug monitor into the onboard)

If you hear any beeps these can indictate where the fault is.
either of these sites below will help you further with that

Beep codes Pc

More beep codes

Power up the pc and see if the fans are working.
If not then double check the power connections to the board.

If you still have no fans it is time to suspect the power supply as the probable cause.

If the fans worked then you should have gotten a display which told you there was an error and offering you a chance to go into the BIOS. ignore it and shut down the PC.

Now connect one drive only and boot again.

Repeat that until you identify the component that is giving you a problem.

Once you find the problem then remove or disconnect and carry on with the rest to see if another component might also cause a problem

If there is only one problem device then you may want to investigate that device further, Unless you don't mind replacing it
