I had the same problem, red blinking light after owning for several years. I decided to replace the capacitor at C914 to see if it would work, and it did. Apparently that capacitor is prone to failure. Since this seems to be a common problem, I created a web page detailing the repair. Hope it is helpful. Repair cost $1.39 + tax.
Try use connect your dvd player with just RCA(composite video) and see if you get regular color picture. If so,you need to go to the system menu to check the video output and see if it is under R Pr Pb-component video setting? If not,be sure to change it to component video setting AND use component video cable to connect to your TV unless your TV don't have this connection. A lot of "aged" problems relate to the power supply with this type of unit. If you are a handy chap and know what capacitors are you will find that finding and replacing the "dry" caps in the power supply will fix most problems including streaky pix and crackly audio.
Be sure NOT to load any CD+ -R,CD+-RW or DVD+-R,DVD+-RW to this unit. Try to load up a standard CD see if there is audio first. If so,try a good(not scratches) dvd movie. If you have tried both and still not working. You need this unit to be repair or buy a new one! Joe
