This is just one of those problems that come associated with this type of camcorder. Try recovering the data by downloading the program at the following link and trying to fix this problem with it. Please let me know how this goes and if it doesn't work let me know as I would be glad to keep trying to get this fixed. I don't believe you did anything wrong but I would call Sony about this and see if they have any new suggestions for this. Personally I would return the player since the quality isn't as good as other cameras.

Sony Handycam says movie recording disabled. How did this happen and how do I undo it?

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot when Recording disabled is displayed by the camcorder.
  1. Verify the disc being used has not been finalized. It is not possible to record additional video on a finalized disc.
  2. Attempt to record on a different disc.

Choppy Video

I had same problem. Don't buy a cleaner. Look inside camcorder and make sure both reel turners are equal in height...they can slide down. Turn both of them...one of mine was down and also did not turn to make contact with tape. We got it to turn and the message C31:23 and the dinging quit. Camera instantly worked like it used to. Good luck.

guys hope you all found the solution like me who had same issue. if you noticed, it says about the aspect ratio and that means the formated disc aspect ratio is not compatible with the aspect ratio your camera need. so re-formating the dvd with right aspect ratio solved the problem quickly and we have peace.
