I have a Gen 8 Hp server with 5No 600GB HDD. The first two disk are mirrored, the other 5 are on raid 5. 1 of the 3 on raid 5 is flagging amber colour. How do I replace the HDD without losing Data?


Before replacing drives • Be sure that the array has a current, valid backup. • Confirm that the replacement drive is of the same type as the degraded drive (either SAS or SATA and either hard drive or solid state drive). • Use replacement drives that have a capacity equal to or larger than the capacity of the smallest drive in the array. The controller immediately fails drives that have insufficient capacity. In systems that use external data storage, be sure that the server is the first unit to be powered down and the last unit to be powered up. Taking this precaution ensures that the system does not, erroneously, mark the drives as failed when the server is powered up. Replacing drives The most common reason for replacing a drive is that it has failed. However, another reason is to gradually increase the storage capacity of the entire system. NOTE: In fault-tolerant configuration, hot-plug hard drives can be replaced when server is ON, but in case of a Non-hot-plug hard drive, it should be replaced when server is OFF. For systems that support hot-pluggable drives, if user replace a failed drive that belongs to a fault-tolerant configuration while the system power is on, all drive activity in the array pauses for 1 or 2 seconds while the new drive is initializing. When the drive is ready, data recovery to the replacement drive begins automatically. For systems that support non-hot-pluggable drives, if user replace a drive belonging to a fault-tolerant configuration while the system power is off, a POST message appears when the system is next powered up. This message prompts user to press the F1 key to start automatic data recovery. If user do not enable automatic data recovery, the logical volume remains in a ready-to-recover condition and the same POST message appears whenever the system is restarted. Automatic data recovery (rebuild) When user replace a drive in an array, the controller uses the fault-tolerance information on the remaining drives in the array to reconstruct the missing data (the data that was originally on the replaced drive) and then write the data to the replacement drive. This process is called automatic data recovery or rebuild. If fault tolerance is compromised, the controller cannot reconstruct the data, and the data is likely lost permanently. Time required for a rebuild The time required for a rebuild varies, depending on several factors: • The priority that the rebuild is given over normal I/O operations (user can change the priority setting by using HP SSA/ACU) • The amount of I/O activity during the rebuild operation • The average bandwidth capability (MBps) of the drives • The availability of drive cache • The brand, model, and age of the drives • The amount of unused capacity on the drives • For RAID 5 and RAID 6, the number of drives in the array • The strip size of the logical volume • Firmware versions of the Smart Array Controller and Hard Disk Drive • Presence of BBWC/FBWC CAUTION: Because data rebuild time may go upto the rate of 200GB/15 minutes, the system could be unprotected against drive failure for an extended period during data recovery or a drive capacity upgrade. When possible, perform rebuild operations only during periods of minimal system activity. When automatic data recovery has finished, the drive status LED changes from flashing green to solid green. If the drive status LED on the replacement drive changes to flashing or solid amber, the rebuild process has terminated abnormally. If an abnormal termination of a rebuild occurs, identify the cause and appropriate corrective steps. Abnormal termination of a rebuild If the activity LED on the replacement drive permanently ceases to be illuminated even while other drives in the array are active, the rebuild process has terminated abnormally. The following table indicates the three possible causes of abnormal termination of a rebuild. Cause 1: An uncorrectable read error has occurred. 1. Back up as much data as possible from the logical drive. CAUTION: Do not remove the drive that has the media error. Doing so causes the logical drive to fail. 2. Restore data from backup. Writing data to the location of the unreadable sector often eliminates the error. 3. Remove and reinsert the replacement drive. This action restarts the rebuild process. If the rebuild process still terminates abnormally: 1. Delete and recreate the logical drive. 2. Restore data from backup. Cause 2: The replacement drive has failed. Verify that the replacement drive is of the correct capacity and is a supported model. If these factors are not the cause of the problem, use a different drive as the replacement. Cause 3: Another drive in the array has failed. A drive that has recently failed can sometimes be made temporarily operational again by cycling the server power. 1. Power down the server. 2. Remove the replacement physical drive (the one undergoing a rebuild), and reinstall the drive that it is replacing. 3. Power up the server. If the newly failed drive seems to be operational again: 1. Back up any unsaved data. 2. Remove the drive that was originally to be replaced, and reinsert the replacement physical drive. The rebuild process automatically restarts. 3. When the rebuild process has finished, replace the newly failed drive. However, if the newly failed drive has not recovered: 1. Remove the drive that was originally to be replaced, and reinsert the replacement physical drive. 2. Replace the newly failed drive. 3. Restore data from backup. When I turn on the computer it boots to "boot to restore disk"


There are several potentials for this problem. The umbrella concern is that the operating system does not appear to be recognized from the hard drive. The problem could be a faulty hard drive (unlikely if you have not heard noise from the drive or you have not had earlier symptoms of read/write problems). The hard drive might be corrupted because of a malware/virus problem. The operating system might be contaminated (no specific reason other than the operating system is not being read and loaded into RAM). If you have critical data on the drive and you have not backed up the hard drive, I would suggest getting an external drive kit from an IT site (Office Depot, CDW, etc) that will handle the drive type and pin configuration for your hard drive. Some laptop hard drives use a 42 pin configuration, others a 44-pin configuration. The more diverse the pin option the better your chances of getting a connection to the drive. The external drive kit will generally allow you to transfer your data files to a second source (another computer or external media storage) via a USB cable and then you can attempt a system rebuild with an operating system disk. If you are not comfortable doing the rebuild or pulling the hard drive from your laptop, make sure your techie saves your data files before rebuilding. Too often the rebuild is accomplished with no attempt to save the data files.

Hard disk replacing compaqcq60-420us


Load the recovery disc in the DVD tray, power up, when logo appears press F12 or the assigned number located bottom right on logo screen, toggle up or down using the arrows on the keyboard, highlight the CD/DVD driver and press enter, this will automatically start the loading process, follow the prompt.

Ps3 says hard file disk corrupted and has to be restored but it just keeps doing this and has restored like 15 times and has not fixed itself. what can i do


1. Restore File System

Enter Safe Mode and select "Restore File System". "Restore File System" will attempt to repair damaged files on the hard drive. If this does not work, try the next step.


2. Rebuild Database

Enter Safe Mode and select "Rebuild Data Base". "Rebuild Data Base" will erase messages, playlists, changes made on [Information] screens, trimming information for pictures in [Photo], video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information. Then attempt to rebuild the PlayStation 3 database. The content that is erased will not be recoverable. If this doesn't work, try the next step.


3. Restore PS3 System

Please note this will erase all content on the hard drive and will not be recoverable.

Enter Safe Mode and select "Restore PS3 System". "Restore PS3 System" will restore the default settings and will format the hard drive. If this doesn't work, try the next step.


4. Re-seat the hard drive

If you have replaced the hard drive in the PlayStation 3, make sure it was installed properly. If the hard drive is not seated correctly, it may cause problems.


5. Try another hard drive (if possible)

There may be an issue with the hard drive that is installed. Try replacing the hard drive with another one.

Boot disk failure no hard disk found


The error means that your system is not able to detect the hard drive on the system, check if the hard drive wire connections are tight and not loose and then try rebooting the system.

Look for hard drive stats on POST whether it succeeds or fails. This is how you can do that.
When system boots up, press the PAUSE?BREAK on the black screen and see whats system comment for your hard drive power test. If it succeeds and your hard drive's connections are also tight then possibly your hard drive might have crashed ( which means there are bad sectors on the hard disk).

Try performing disk checking on the hard drive to see if there are any bad sectors on the hard disk, the disk check will automatically fix the soft errors but if the errors and hard errors in that case the disk checking utility will not automatically fix the errors and you will need to get a new hard drive.

I have an Acer Aspire x1700 and it will not reboot, I cannot locate the reboot disk. How can you help?


Yuo need a lot of try and error to be successful.
First your OS and the BOOT disk that comes with your machine.But if you dont had the CD you need to buy and download it.
Store like Bestbuy,CompUSA,etc.. sell this CD,s or go to this LINK where you can buy it online and download it, choose your OS and any other specs about your System.
After all you need to BURN the files in a blank CD or order for mail shipment.

Then we going to BOOT the system id the CD drive.

To rebuild your hard drive, do the following:
  1. Power up your Acer system.
  2. When prompted (after memory testing completes), press CTRL + ALT + ESC to enter CMOS setup.
  3. At the CMOS Setup screen select Advanced BIOS Features
  4. Verify the Boot Options Sequence is set to the following order:
    1st [CD-ROM]
    2nd [Floppy Disk]
    3rd [Hard Disk]
  5. Insert the Acer System CD, DISK 1 in your CD-ROM drive.
  6. Press F10 to exit and save. When prompted, Do you want to save CMOS data?, select [Yes], then press ENTER.
  7. The system will reboot from the CD-ROM. After booting from the CD-ROM, you will see the Acer Hard Drive Rebuild options displayed.

    Note: Use your mouse for choice selections during the HDD recovery process. The mouse will respond slowly during this procedure, DO NOT press the Enter key. Pressing the Enter key will cause the HDD recovery process to terminate.
  8. Select HDD Full Rebuild and follow the on-screen instructions.
  9. When prompted to insert Acer Recovery CD, DISK 2, wait for the CD-ROM to eject DISK 1.
  10. Close the CD-ROM tray and click OK. The system will continue to rebuild the hard drive back to factory load.
After being prompted to remove disk and restart system the unit will load system software and hardware. During this process the system will reboot several times.
Your Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) ID number will automatically be entered for you. Should you need this number for any reason, look for your Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) ID number on the cover of your system.

In my IBM X226 server 2 HDD became unavailable in RAID 5 configuration. now I have replaced the hard disks and rebuild process is continuing. 1962 operating system not found error message is being shown...


Raid level 5 gives you some redundancy in your raid however it only allows you to lose one hard drive, two hdd lost would not permit to recover from. the parity bit can rebuild one hard drive but not two, sorry your raid might be lost

My xserver had a bad HD. I replaced it, but it will not do an automatic rebuild of the new drive. I checked for the manuel rebuild option but can find it.


Are you sure RAID is configured for your drives, determine if disk tolerance is in place and find out the level of disk tolerance in place. If No disk tolerance is configured, you may not be able to rebuild the failed drive.

RAID6 problemme


Raid 6 will tolerate two simulatneous hard disk failures. So the posibility for data loss is very less. But the rebuilting steps defers for different server products like IBM and DELL. But normaly when u change a new hard disk the server will automatically starts the rebuilding process.

Xseries 346 wont boot


You don't say whether or not your os is on the RAID 5 partition. Assuming that it is (for performance reasons, this is not recommended) then you should check to see if you have the option of configuring a separate raid configuration on your raid card (e.g. do you have a card with more then one RAID channel?) If this is so, I would create a separate RAID 1 array and install the OS just on that. Then you can mount the RAID 5 array with your data intact. Once you're up and running, you can remove the old OS partition, as it's no longer needed.
