It may have a 5 year guarantee. The utility called Seatools, which is a free download, offers an automatic warranty check, and might be able to test or repair it.

Hi there we purchased a maxtor basics 500gb hard drive about 3 years ago. we have had children in that time and unfortunetly our two year old daughter dropped it. we have taken it to a service store but...

If it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken then yes. But if it is the hard drive itself that is broken then no.
From what happened I'm thinking that it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken. That being said, you can easily buy one without the hard drive online. When doing this be sure you know what kind of hard drive is in your Maxtor enclosure. This is important because you need to be sure that your hard drive and enclosure are compatible. Check to see if it uses SATA, ATA, or PATA connectors and then buy the corresponding external hard drive enclosure.
Once you have bought your new empty external hard drive enclosure, it is simply a matter of opening up your Maxtor enclosure and moving the hard drive inside to your newly purchased enclosure and connecting it to your computer.
To avoid problems like this in the future, look into "cloud based storage" to back up all of your data securely online.

Maxtor 320 GB mini not working

If it shows up as a USB mass storage device it:-
1. Has power
2. It is connected to the computer via USB.
3.The correct software has been loaded for the hard drive.
The beep sound is probably an error message saying that the drive is not responding properly inside the case.

Hard drives Drives have been known to stick or not start up due to power cables or ribbon cables being dislodged. Try pushing these back into place.

If this is not the problem go to the Maxtor site (maxtor.com) and report the problem with the drive, not the USB which appears to functioning correctly.

Maxtor 160G hard drive - access denied

The drive is dead. Here is a solution that is not guaranteed to work but worth a try. Place the drive into a Ziploc bag and then place that into 2nd Ziploc bag, place into the freezer for 48 hours allowing the drive to get good and cold, once the drive is cold before removing from the freezer get computer ready to back up the files needed on the drive. I have had this work but only for about 30 minutes at a time max so plan on 15 - 20 as your target. Also keep in mind I have never had this work more than once so target critical files first. If this does work please rate.....
