Try starting it in safe mode, right after you turn it on you will se option like esc, f1 and f10 at the bottom of the screen, press the f8 key and a menu will display, use arrow keys to go down to safe mode option then press enter, do it quick, you only have 25 seconds to do it before computer starts normally, you wont see the f8 option but you have to press it, if it doesn't work, try keeping it pressed till menu shows...

When I turn my Toshiba A45-S151 laptop on, I first get the screen that shows the Toshiba logo and has the four icons under the logo. Usually the next screen is black, has a cursor in the top left corner,...

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows is not loading because its most critical, core files have been corrupted beyond repair. The only thing you can do is to reinstall using the recovery cd or your own Windows install disk.

Black screen, blinking cursor in top left hand corner

Could be a number of issues, incl unseated processor or a faulty hard drive. First off I would remove mains & battery, remove covers from underneath and reseat any memory or processors you can find - by reseat I mean just take out and put back.If this fails, I would look to price up a new hard drive before condemning the machine.

Blank Screen

First thing to do is make sure you don't have any disks in the drive. It could be trying to boot from a non-bootable disk.
