Question about Olympus STYLUS TOUGH 8010 Digital Camera
Hello My name is Diego. I recently purchased the Olympus stylus tough 8010 alittle over a monthe ago through Best Buy. The camera was working fine, but i took it to a waterfall and i submurged it in water about a foot deep and it started to fail on me. I made sure the battery door was locked and everything but water still got in and the camera started to turn off and later on the lense got fogged. I owned the older model and i never had this problem. I was hoping to get instructions on how to get it replaced. I use the camera practically everyday and tell as many people about the product and how great it is! please reply as soon as possible because i connot live without this camera and would like to get another one i can use underwater as soon as possible. Thank you, i appreciate your time and apolagize for any problems i may have caused. Sincerly, Diego .A. Valdes
Unfortunately the pressure of water from any running water source, especially a waterfall, can easily exceed the specification of the camera waterproofing. It's for that exact reason that the camera instructions tell you that if the camera ever needs rinsing it must be done in a bucket and not under a running tap (US=faucet). Admittedly they do normally survive such mishandling but you only need to be unlucky once.
Once water gets into your camera, it's game over, sorry. Too many internal components will be irreparably damaged and it's cheaper to buy a new camera. The warranty will not apply to your broken camera as it was misused, even if it was by mistake.
I suggest that you complain in writing to Olympus describing exactly what happened and pointing out that you have been loyal to them in the past, requesting a free goodwill repair as the manual does not make it clear enough that you must not take the camera under running water. It will also help if you point out that if you must buy another camera then you will switch to a different brand instead. Your chances of success are slim but it's definitely worth trying as it's amazing how persuasive a well-written and polite letter of complaint can be.
Good luck, and sorry that there isn't a more positive answer for you.
