You didn't say if ST01C timer stopped working ... or if you are programming new timer and can't get it to work.

I assume you are programming new timer.
Intermatic: download EZ-instruction and full-manual so you have BIG print.

Troubleshooting in manual covers many things:
1)Press On-off button. You should hear audible click ... that tells you timer battery is good ... do the lights come on?? Load should turn on-off with manual override without programming. If load does not turn on, your wiring is wrong, a breaker is bad, a bulb is burned out, a 3-way switch on same circuit is bad.
2)Solution: review wiring diagrams > the key to wiring is black connects to Hot and blue connect to Load
Solution: If your black and blue wires are reversed, timer will not turn load on-and-off. Change them and see. Red wire is not used in 2-way switching.
3) Conflicts in programming cause timer to ignore program. For example program1 says ON at 7 and OFF at 8, but program2 says opposite.
4) Solution: make a chart of your programs
5) Solution: Reset timer and reprogram again being careful to follow instructions > instructions are tricky

What is the intermatic e 1020 used for just moved into a house andits in the bathroom and makes a lot of noise.

The E1020 timer is reliable heavy-duty 24-hour on-off analog timer with replaceable trippers and manual override, rated 12 amps.
This timer replaces ordinary single-pole on-off switch.
Timer has extra white wire that connects to white neutral wires inside box to run timer mechanism, while mechanical single-pole switch does not need this wire.
I don't know what it is doing... maybe running the vent fan periodically, or turning on attic vent fan?

For same timer, with less noise, install E1100-1200 aka the KM series in-wall analog timer. Or install digital in-wall timer, or replace timer with on-off switch.

Self adjusting in wall timer

Timer is not known.
Copy following links to identify timer and download manual
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-timers-and-manuals.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html
In the manual, you will see directions for resetting timer.

If resetting does not work, then review timer programming carefully to make sure there are no conflicts in the programming such as overlapping days, or inconsistent am-pm, etc

Had to change battery. Since I did this the day will scroll several times and will not let me set the day, nor the time, nor the mode. Is my unit toast ?? As it was working till I changed the battery.

Most digital timers suggest resetting as last-step effort to restore functionality.
This particular timer is reset by removing battery.
Try removing battery again. Otherwise it seems the timer has gone bad.
HB88RC is discontinued product.
Replacement is heavy-duty Intermatic HB800RCL 2-outlet or HB800RCH 1-outlet timer.

Suddenly the timer is not turning on the lights. The screen on the timer says "SOU". ????

Here is link to product manual at Intermatic. Manual shows troubleshooting, but doesn't show "SOU"
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/consumer%20indoor%20timers/in-wall%20timers/st01c.aspx

ST01C works on a 3-way circuit > If another switch is involved, or if switch or timer are not grounded properly, it might affect timer. Troubleshoot says disconnect red wire from 3-way circuit, and see if problem continues, and then suggests replacing timer.

Manual says if CR2 batteries are weak, then BATT shows on screen. Also says weak batteries will cause circuit not to work.
Check the CR2 batteries: Timer holds programming while you replace batteries and clean terminals.

ST01C programmable timer works on circuits up to 100 feet >> I assume because it's battery operated >> electrical interference affects the circuit because troubleshoot lists 'buried wire' as cause of failure. I guess nearby electrical devices could affect performance of timer.

Timer is rated for 15 amps which means practical maximum of 12 amps >>> so 120 volts x 12 A = 1440 watts max or 14-100 watt bulbs >> if you are running more watts, or running close to maximum, or if timer gets warm during operation, this would shorten lifespan simply by heat affecting the circuit.

Interesting that the EI600, EJ500 & ST01C battery-operated timers each has troubleshoot section in manual >>> implying these timers are problematic. ST01C has limited 1 year warranty. EI600 has limited 5 year warranty.

ST01C has 40 on-off programs per week.

If 7 on-off events per week can do the job, you can switch to the EI500 [click on EI500 to access manual]
http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/in-wall%20timers/digital%207-day%20time%20switches.aspx
>>> the manual shows no troubleshooting section. The EI500 requires connection to neutral or white wire, since the timer runs on electricity instead of battery

[you can use ground wire instead of neutral]

I need a printout for instructions to set an Intermatic EJ 500C digital wall switch

I have a intermatic house timer to turn on and off the outside lights We moved in 5 years ago to this house. One evening somehow the lights did not turn on or turn off when programed. I accidentally reset the system by pushing the reset button instead of the on / off button. I dont have a model number of the timer to look up, maybe you can tell me where I can find it on the device? or general instructions on how to set the system to go on when the time is set and of . I was hoping to see if I can find a model similar to one I have. I saw one close but I dont know its the same or not.500c or maybe a model 10 years ago plus. By the way it has a battery conpartment using a single AA battery. The best description I can give you is its white in color...rectangle has a display screeen on top of the unit....and has 6 soft push buttons ....3 on to , 3 on the bottom....top row of buttons has MODE ON/OFF EVENT...RESET the bottom row has DAY...HOUR....AND MINUTE..Please advise
