Boot To BIOS and ensure you reset factory Defaults.

If no change try this:

Testimonial: "thanks, I had to figure out how to boot to bios, also defaults wanted to do EVERYTHING, not just function keys, otherwise your advice worked fine"

    Boot to BIOS worked.
I restarted my laptop, then the problem was trying to remember how to get into the bios. I had an inkling it involved a function key, but couldn't remember which one.
I guessed F2. Of course since the problem was I couldn't get function keys to act as function keys without pressing the Fn key, while the computer was restarting I kept the Fn and F2 keys pressed. A screen flashed by that offered F12 for BIOS options, so I exited out of the screen I got via the F2 key, let windows open and restarted again, this time keeping Fn and F12 pressed.
The resulting screen sure looked like it was the same as the one I got from pressing F2.
At any rate I selected BIOS,
    System Behavior
that gave me a screen with 2 radio buttons
    multimedia key first was selected
function key first was not selected
I toggled the radio button to 'function key first'
Then I noticed options at the bottom
    load defaults
    apply
Since your instruction was 'reset factory Defaults' I thought I'd try 'load defaults', but this gave me a popup 'load all system default settings'. I wasn't sure I wanted EVERY default, so I backed out and selected just 'function key first' and 'apply' which accomplished what I wanted, the function keys f1-f12 now behave as function keys, and now behave as their upper left icons only when I also press the Fn key.

Since the first radio button is 'multimedia key first' I suspect that that was the factory default, if so in this case I didn't want the default.

On portable systems, almost ALWAYS the default BIOS settings are preferred. I have never encountered a I1501 that needed then changed from default, hence the advice to reset to default.

On my HP 3105m I have the FN/F1-12 keys of course.

This drove me batty as well!

When booting up the HP, press the F10 key to enter the BIOS.
There, scroll to 'System Configuration'
where you will see 'Action Keys Mode'
Change this from 'Enabled' to 'Disabled'

And the "normal" function of the F1-F12 key (and your sanity) will be restored!

Hi i have the asus n53jg laptop. absolutly amazing laptop cant nock it i just have a little problem that i want to get sorted see the laptops function keys that run along the top have shortcuts on them...

Hi,

The function keys that you have works alone and in combinations. You can press and hold Fn key then tap on any of those keys to get the short cuts. You can also press and hold Alt key and any of those to get another short cut. It actually depends on what you want to do.

For example:

Using single key:
F5 - it will refresh a window
F11 - try it in internet explorer to see the result

Using Combination:
Alt + F4 - it will close an open window
Fn + F3 - it will lock or disable your touchpad

I hope I understood your concern and helped. Goodluck

You state to hold the fn, and hit the power button.....OK, whats the ( fn ) key ?

The Fn key is a key found usually on the keyboards of portable computers (laptops, netbooks etc) and sometimes on desktop type keyboards.

It is a key usually marked with a blue coloured "Fn" and is located somewhere on the bottom left row of keys.

The Fn key is used in combination with other keys that have (usually) blue letters or icons on them to activate the special functions (Fn) on these keys.

For example, on the laptop I'm writing this on; If I press F5 the computer would perform the action my software has normally assigned to F5. If however I press the Fn button and F5, the computers internal function for decreasing screen brightness is invoked.

Different computer makes have different assignment to their keyboard Fn so you can't generally say press Fn+F5 to decrease screen brightness, it might be assigned to something else, volume or sleep-mode or even nothing. The "blue" text or icon will give an indication of what it will do.

Hope this helps explain the Fn key ;)

My keyboards shortcuts don't link to the screen?

F5 is the default screen refresh for many laptops. If there is a volume change feature on your laptop which also uses F5, chances are it is a Feature enabled key. To make the volume work, look on your laptop for a key most with blue letters that is printed with the letters "Fn"

Hold down this key while pressing the F5 key. This should adjust the volume correctly. Did it work. Please post your feedback and let me know.

Thanks!
