Question about Garmin GPSMAP 180 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Garmin gps180 satellite search.

Hi everyone, I bought a boat and the gps180 was in it. When I turn it on, it searches for a satellite and never finds one. No matter how long I wait. I thought maybe it was the antenna but everything looks good. Any ideas?

Book says should get satellite in cold. Goes on to saySearch the sky appr. 5 minutes. Same for autolocate.

You can go to Garmin and print out the owneers manual and that might help.

Also, antennas are cheap on Ebay.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

I have a garmin nuvi 205 and it has worked great. I plugged it into my Mac to update the software and disconnected it. Now it will not find satellites and it has been searching for longer than an hour....

Hi,

it looks like the system has reset itself after the software upgrade.

are you indoors or outside when your letting it search for satellites?

On my one I had to plug it into the power port in the car and leave it on, i think my battery was low as well though which i assumed could minimise my chances of a satellite lock.

Make sure you try it outside and plugged in to a power source if you can.

Once it finds the satellites it will also correct your location and set the correct time if there is a difference.

Hope that helps

Mike

reset it by turning off and hold finger on bottom right corner of screen, turn on, and wait then release finger, let unit go through set up screen and when down selrct correct country/state that you are searching for, you dont need gps signal as it will default to similation mode to search but it is recommended at set up phase

Hi,
use the web-updater at garmin
or update the firmware at garmin,
turn WAAS on

turn GPS signal off
go outside after the update
turn GPS signal back on ( takes upto 15 mins to locate satelites )

Searching for satellite but never finds - what is wrong?

I had one like that last year, I found if I lied to it when it asked what state I was in, then it would find the satellites and work fine ... until the next time you turned it on. That one was fixed by installing new v7.2 firmware using Garmin WebUpdater through the USB port.

I've got one right now that won't find the satellites and the firmware trick didn't work. That's all I've got so far. Tom.

Install batteries in the unit, turn it on and set it outside for several hours with a clear view torward the sky. It probably had not been used for and extended period of time and needs to re-sync.

Garmin's KNA-G510 won't find satellites unless I tell it I'm in another state and it expands satellite search

I have the g510 with a kenwood head unit. On the satellite screen, on the left it only shows one satellite and on the right it is showing that there are upwards of six or so satellites that it is receiving reception from. I thought it might be the antenna, so I bought a new one. Still having the same problem. It cannot find my location. I've updated the software, I don't know what to do!!

My Garmin has stopped finding destinations - just says "Searching for Satellite)+

I had the same problem with my Nuvi 310. Found a solution in here that works. Here's a copy of the advice.....note you will need to get in the car and set it for a destination and go. 5-10 mins later the Garmin Nuvi will lose the satellites, but don't adjust it it, leave it on and keep going. Eventually after about an hour it will right itself, pick up the satellites and evrything will be back to normal.

Here's the advice:

I experienced the same problem about acquiring satellite signal even when it's a clear sunny day. After 30 mintues, it was still searching!
The unit appeared to have "stuck" in this acquiring mode. The following worked for me:
1) open the GPS antenna
2) press the bottom left screen while holding the power button to turn the unit on
3) enter maintenace mode
4) select diagnostics
5) clear error report, do NOT clear any user data
6) restart unit the usual way

My GPS 350 was able to acquire satellite signal in less than 1 minute after the above steps were taken.
