Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

Open Question

Washer Fills to Same Level Every Wash Load Kenmore 110.82983120 Water Level Switch: 3347891 It seems the water level selector does not actually select the water level anymore. Each wash is filling to the same level which is about a low to medium. I opened up the top console and located the water level switch. Both the top and bottom of the clear tube is connected. I removed the switch and was able to blow into the inlet tube and get continuity. And selecting the low to high settings produces a different sound when blowing into the switch. I can blow through the tube too and doesn't seem to be restricted. However, when I shake the switch, there is some small object rattling around in the switch itself. Sounds like a small screw or chuck of plastic or something. We have been adding water to the washer so there will be enough to wash the clothes. Getting to be a pain. Is the switch the problem?

SOURCE: Washer doesn't fill with water. Only enough for a small load.

A - Two things could be your problem...
1) - sometimes the screens in the fill valve or inside the ends of the fill hose get clogged up...use a tooth brush to clean them out. Don't forget to shut off the water first before removing the hoses to check for this.
2) - The fill valve itself may not be opening fully = time for a new fill valve.

Possible that the settings of the water level sensor is too high, you need to short the switch and see if the inlet flow stops. if not there are issues with the main controller unit.

Your water level sensor, or perhaps the selector switch itself, is faulting on you.

Next time it sticks on a medium load, see if you can move it to a light load. If it sticks on a light load, goto medium load. In both cases, if the washer comes back to life (starts to agitate or resumes filling), then your selector switch is out.

If rotating the selector switch doesn't seem to do anything, then your pressure switch / level switch is faulty.

Selector switch and pressure switch are both located in the compartment where the controls are mounted.

Washer stopped filling. power still on. turning dial to different positions has no effect.

water level sensor not working or load size selector switch failed. could also be a failed water inlet solenoid valve. Turn it to cold wash and see if water fills again, if not turn it to hot wash and see if it fills again.

If it fills up to normal level on other settings then the water selector switch is bad.

Look at the back side of this switch and you should see a tube connected from the switch to the lower part of the tub. Take the tube loose at the switch and blow through to check for any blockage. Look at the tube for holes.

Kenmore 80 Series - water wont fill to full load

remove edge decore trims from left and right side front of control panel8b608f8.jpg
remove phillips screws from bottom corners of contol panel
remove knob from water level selector
raise control panel ~1 inch then flip over backwords on pivots
depress lock tab on right/underside of water level control body where it touches metal mount plate
rotate water level control body 45deg anti clockwise
pull body off
top side of body next to knob shaft is 1/8 hex head bolt
turn clockwise to rais water level
anticlockwise to lower water level
machine can be operated with this part not fitted so can check level. fill, adjust screw, fill will start again, adjust screw, until water level is correct
reinstall in reverse order
Incidentally, the cause is a VERY small wire spring inside the control body that is not really up to the task, and stretches over years.
Its a common occurrence, and I make this repair, on callouts, no parts required, couple times a month you may have to flip the switch to reset to get the water to restart filling

This problem is generally caused by a pressure switch failure. The pressure switch controls when to shut the water inlet valve off at the appropriate level and is located behind the load level or water level selector knob on the operator console. Before assuming, however, that you have a defective switch, read the following link first:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r762094-washer_overflows

In the majority of the problems I have experienced with an overflow condition on a washer, it has been caused by the air hose coming off the pressure switch. Hopefully, this will be the case with your washer and will not require parts. I hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if you require additional assistance.

Kenmore 90 series top loader washer water level.

There are easy checks before you replace the level selector body

remove the trim plates at both ends of the control panel to expose Phillips head screws 1 at each end. remove the screws
lift and swing the control panel up and over the back, it is hinged at the top.
The washer can be operated in this condition for testing

1 Rremove the air hose, and blow it out.
often water remains in the tube after changing levels, the water is not compressible so a small change in water level in the tank, makes too much difference in the sensor.
reconnect the tube and try a cycle ~1/3 chance of fixing it

If fail,
2 The spring inside Kenmore water level sensors that reacts to air pressure in the tube is not up to the job and stretches, not noticeable till changing water level settings moves the anchor point of the spring.
pull off water level knob from control panel front, from control panel back depress lock tab at right of level selector body rotate counter clockwise 45 deg and remove
adjacent to selector knob shaft is 1/8inch nut, turn clockwise to raise water level counter-clockwise to lower water level, test, adjust, test adjust ~1/2chance of fixing it

If fail
replace level selector body
