Question about Kenmore 60721 Refrigerator

1 Answer

Refrigerator not cool enough in garage.

I moved the refrigerator into the garage last fall. Now that the weather is warmer, the refrigerator does not stay cold enough inside to keep food. The inside temp is in the upper 40s or 50s when the garage is around 80. I had a service appointment but canceled it when the technician told me over the phone that this model is not designed to be used in a garage. I was under the impression that because of the Automatic Freeze Control feature, this model should work in unregulated temperature areas. Any advice?

    Thanks for the quick response!

Btw, this is a Kenmore "all-refrigerator" model 253.60721, about 8 years old. We are in north Alabama, so the garage temp can vary from the mid 20s in winter to the mid 90s in summer. :(

Last night I moved the fridge out from the wall and away from everything else and removed the stuff stacked on top of it. The technician did tell me on the phone that to have any chance of working there has to be good air circulation completely around the box. (I hadn't thought about the stuff piled on top) Well, this morning the garage temp was in the 70s and the fridge temp was about 35, so I'm hopeful. I'll see what happens when the garage gets back up into the mid 80s or 90s.

Okay, I have had the fridge out in the middle of the garage, with nothing on or around it for several days now. It does seem to be working better, but still not cool enough to keep food. The garage temp is in the mid 80s now and the temp inside the fridge is in the high 40s. I have monitored the temps while trying different things. I tried pointing a box fan at the back, then at the left and right side. I also adjusted the temp control inside, turning it to the coldest setting. Nothing has helped. In fact, all of these actually made the problem worse, causing the fridge temp to go into the 50s, even at night when the surrounding temp was in 70s. The best performance I have seen is with the temp setting on 4. That gives me almost a 40 degree difference between outside and inside, but I need to do better.

Is there anything else I can try or any kind of troubleshooting I can do myself at this point?

A small amount of cold air is in the refrigerator, but not enough to cool the contents of beer and soft drinks. The model number is 594.

Refrigerator/freezer in garage not freezing

Most refrigerator Manufactures have tested these machines in hot and cold weather and weather will effect operation and electricity consuption.
As far as cold weather goes It would run much better in cold weather than hot. As far as it being in the garage : It will wear on it faster. The humidity is not good on them and they get more dirt through the system and will need its normal mantenance more often. not to mention bugs and rodents like to find a warm place to hid with fee dinking water and a refrigerator provides that for them.

Top mounted freezer on refrigerator not working

Move the refrigerator to a room that is at least 50 degrees F.

Temps on most refrigerators are regulated by the fresh foods temp. If your garage is let's say 35 degrees, the fresh foods temp will most likely never raise enough to turn the refrigerator on. With the refrigerator never running, the freezer compartment will warm to 35 degrees, resulting in everything melting. Even if garage is a bit warmer, say 45, the refrig will not run long enough for the freezer to maintain a low enough temperture. If the garage temp falls to below freezing, say 20 degrees, the food in the fresh foods compartment will freeze. (outdoor beverage dispensers have internal heaters to prevent product from freezing !) Please don't rate this if not a Fix-Ya for you, as anything else lowers my score.

I don't really understand the question. the outside temp. should have nothing to do with the inside temp, except for efficiency on the bill. You do have gaskets on the doors, right?
