Question about Rv Motorhome Dual Co & Lp Gas Alarm Detector

1 Answer

I turned ON my LP gas detector in my Fleetwood '97 RV and left it turned ON. Three days later I noticed that my detector light was out. I toggled the ON/OFF switch and got nothing. I checked the fuse box in the engine compartment and discovered that both 5Amp fuses connected to the LP detector had blown. Any advice?

First I'd remove screws and pull detector out to see if perhaps any loose wires that may have touched each other or a ground. Second, check for any bad connections as well at solenoid on propane line feeding system. Being how it says it's a Motorhome, the propane detector usually has to be on to activate solenoid to open gas flow to appliances etc. If all connections appear good, you may have a bared (+) wire (short) that you need to look for. Area around wires coming from propane solenoid is a good place to start, seeing how they are usually exposed to the elements, more than interior wiring. You may end up having to disconnect one or the other or both to start with, and then re-attach one at a time to determine which way to go, As in a wire running to fuse box, or wire running from solenoid below at propane tank. Can't rule out shorted solenoid as well.

We cannot get any lp to any appliances

Obviously the detector must be faulty, or bad connection from detector to gas valve on system. You'll have a power wire coming in to back of detector that you need to attach directly to wire going to gas valve in line near connection at tank. Use a continuity tester/multimeter to determine which wire. Check all connections at back of propane detector and make sure power to it, before resorting to direct connection temporarily until detector can be replaced. Should have power in only on one wire when off, and power at other wire(s) except ground when turned on. That wire will be (should be) the one going to gas valve near tank.

Yes, those detectors will trip on many gases, and if your battery or Batteries are boiling that bad, you should have them and charging circuit (converter etc.) checked.

Assuming that you want a 12 volt equivalent, you should wire the batteries as in the following diagram.

2006 Sandpiper travel trailer - The LP gas detector keeps going off and we didn't even have the gas turned on.

May be faulty and need to be replaced but check for proper voltage to it first. Some of those detectors can go off from hairspray, deodorant spray, perfume, high humidity, etc (aerosols)
Even a dog laying close to it with a little gas can do it sometimes. (lol) seriously. Do you have a battery hooked up to your trailer as well, may help.
