There was recently a firmware upgrade for this series of computers by HP - have you applied that, and is that what you mean by "system BIOS"?

Incidentally, there IS another way of securing a wireless network. You can get the MAC address of your particular network card, and then program the router to only accept logins from network cards with your particular MAC address. If you want me to take you through this, let me know - I have a linksys router myself and this was how I set it up with my DV6600.

Does it just sporadically stop working? have you tried assigning an IP etc manually?

Have you checked the Event Viewer for clues on why it is dropping the connection?

Are you using the software that came with your wireless NIC, or the built in Vista application?

What appears to be working is changing from TKIP to AES.
So far so good.

I have thought about mac filtering. I don't think it is as secure as some think. I am not a big fan. spoof the mac is not that hard anymore. If however I have to go back to wep then I will do a combo of wep, and mac filter.

I know no wireless is foolproff, but I want to make it as hard as possible for warhawks.

I can be surfing along and the webpages become unresponsive. then I get notifaction that I have limited network connection. I can not then aquire a proper address without rebooting.

I am using letting Vista to do the wireless

I want to know how i can make my Linksys Router WRT160N work as access point

Hi,

By default Linksys router behaves as Access point. On some router you have to enable the wireless function.

So the following to configure the router Wireless Access Point

Click the below link
http://192.168.1.1

Now it will ask for username and password

Enter username = ( blank) and password = admin
If you can't login using this credentials then you will have to reset the router

If you logged in . Then click on Wireless > Wireless security

On this screen select

Security Mode : WPA Personal
WPA Algorithm : TKIP
WPA shard Key : "enter a password here"
Group Key Renewal : set to default

Click on save settings. After that restart router .
Now your wireless network is secured and you will have to type the WPA shared key inorder to connect to router when it prompts. You can connect as many devices as you wish since it is a access point

Thanks

Vote me If it helps

How do set a password to secure my connection

I have found this website detailing the steps necessary to setting up your Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router with a password. You can skip steps 7 - 8, unless you know about MAC address filtering, and wish to implement it (MAC address filtering allows only the computers you specify by their MAC address to connect to your network, eliminating outside computers from connecting to it).

Here is the link --> Set Up Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

I bought Linksys El000 How do I connect to X Box?

You will need to check the wireless settings of the router. You will needthe name of your wireless network ( SSID) and the wireless network key or passphrase.
You are using E1000 router. This is new series of routers from Linksys.
If you are using the security type WPA/WPA2 mixed then use only the WPA personal and TKIP.
now go to X-box and try to connect to the wireless.

Connecting a brother hl2170 wirless printer to a linksys wrt54g

Take note all the wireless settings of the router first. Now go to the printer and Press Menu/Settings, look for wireless setup wizard. It should find the network, highlight it and connect. If it asks you for the network key, type your wireless network key. It only allows WPA-Personal(TKIP) and WEP. If you have WPA2 or AES, it will not connect

How do I put an encryption on my linksys router?

Securing your wireless network is a simple process, which generally does not require a lot of time. This can be done by:
  • Enabling WEP or WPA on the Router
  • Enabling Wireless MAC filter on the Router
  • Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router
NOTE: The wireless security modes available may vary depending on the model of the router and wireless adapter you are using.
Enabling WEP on the Router
Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP) is a type of wirelesssecurity which does not change. It provides comparable confidentialityto a traditional wired network. There are two types of WEP you canchoose from:
a. WEP 64-bit: This type of WEP consists of 10-hexadecimal codes. To enable WEP 64-bit, click here.
b. WEP 128-bit:This type of WEP consists of 26-hexadecimal codes hence it is moresecured compared to WEP 64-bit. To enable WEP 128-bit, click here.
Enabling WPA on the Router
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a type of wireless securitywhich is dynamic in nature. Meaning, it changes depending on the timerenewal you will specify. Hence, WPA is more secured compared to WEP.
  • Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (WPA-TKIP) – utilizes a stronger encryption method and incorporates Message Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers.
  • Advanced Encryption System (WPA-AES) – utilizes a symmetric 128-bit block data encryption
To enable WPA, click here.
Enabling Wireless MAC Filter on the Router
Wireless access can be filtered using the MAC address of thewireless devices transmitting within your network’s radius. You caneither permit or prevent specific wireless computers access to yourwireless network.
To permit wireless computers to connect to your wireless network, click here.
To prevent wireless computers to connect to your wireless network, click here.
Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router
Disabling the SSID broadcast is one way of securing your wirelessnetwork. This procedure will prevent other users from detecting yourSSID, or your wireless network name, when they attempt to viewavailable wireless networks in your area. For instructions, click here.

Wireless router connection problems

Assuming "cannot connect to linksys router directly" means you cannot connect to a Wireless Lan managed by Linksys router,
1) try to connect new computer to LinkSys Router using a Lan cable, add new PC to your network.
2) recover protocol (WEP or WPA) and Key of WLAN (Passphrase or Key: TKIP or AES) either from other PC on same network either from your Router.
3) If you missed actual key you must connect to router and reset it to a new key to be eventually used for every connected device.

I want to create a secure network password for my wireless router

The steps I'm about to teach you is to create a WPA Personal Network Key to prevent random users from accessing and altering your network.

Windows XP:

Go to Start > Run. Type in cmd and press enter. A black box will appear with some text in it. Type in ipconfig and press enter. Some more text will appear. Look for the words Default Gateway. Next to them will be an IP Address. Type this IP address into your browser.

A diolouge box will appear, asking you for a username or password. If you have not configured this already, leave the username field blank and type in the password field admin. THe Linksys router configuration page will display.

Click the tab taht says Wireless. Click the subtab that says Wireless Security. In the drop down box that says security mode, select WPA Personal. Make sure where it says WPA Algorithms, TKIP is selected. In the WPA Shared Key box, type in a password that you are sure you will remember, or write it down. When finished, selected the button that says Save Settings.

Your network is now secure with the key you have made. The default SSID (or network username) is called linksys.
